Ray Midge is waiting for his credit card bill to arrive. His wife, Norma, has run off with her ex-husband, taking Ray's cards, shotgun and car. But from the receipts, Ray can track where they've gone. He takes off after them, as does an irritatingly tenacious bail bondsman, both following the romantic couple's spending as far as Mexico. There Ray meets Dr Reo Symes, the seemingly down-on-his-luck and rather eccentric owner of a beaten up and broken down bus, who needs a ride to Belize. The further they drive, in a car held together by coat-hangers and excesses of oil, the wilder their journey gets. But they're not going to give up easily.

Ridiculous fun. Great writing. How many books are set in British Honduras?

A good analysis of the troubled mind of Ray Midge. It's funnier as an audiobook, and don't expect a nice and tidy resolution.

This was funny, yes, in a somewhat dark way, but it is not great and it is far from the funniest I've ever read (the terms some reviewer used, prompting me to try it).

Es hora de leer Dog of the South again. I read this book every year or so. It never fails to make me laugh at Ray Midge and the characters he encounters, Dr. Reo Symes, afraid of going over a cliff in a Mexican bus, and who can resist a guffaw at the Bible quiz Ray must take with Dr. Symes's ancient mother?! Don't piddle away another year before enjoying this treat.
