Army Corps engineer and astronaut Roy McBride is searching for answers in the depths of space. Twenty years ago, Roy's father went in search of proof of the existence of extraterrestrial life on Neptune during a one-way mission. The mission was designated officially as a failure. Roy searches the solar system for the truth about both his father's mission and a recent mystery that has unfolded that threatens Earth. What Roy doesn't know is that this journey will do more than test him physically and mentally. The answers he finds will challenge everything he understands about the existence of humans.

Visually, it's a spectacle worth seeing. Artistically, Brad Pitt is good enough to stay with the movie till its end. Tommy Lee Jones is his usual self, so that could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on if you are a fan (for me it was an adequate thing). There is a thought-provoking line at the end of the movie that should cause us all to consider what life is all about. Liv Tyler is in her for what almost feels like a cameo. Overall, a decent movie but not one I would necessarily recommend that you go out of your way to watch.

Just an amazingly bad movie. Pretentious, with incredibly heavy-handed symbolism at every turn. A meandering plot that casually kills off characters in the name of pursuing the cliched "missing father" quest of its Stoic White Male Lead (TM), who at the second act does something so monstrous that his happy ending felt undeserved and insulting. There are half a dozen other, better slow-paced sci-fi movies that explore similar themes with much greater grace and subtlety, beginning with either adaptation of "Solaris" (which this movie clearly wishes it was).

Slow space film. Beautifully filmed but fairly lacking in plot, which means that, for me, Brad Pitt doesn’t really do much by way of interesting acting. Seems to be strongly trying to emulate “2001: A Space Odyssey” but that movie’s already been done and this doesn’t seem to bring anything new to the game. Tries to throw in some action sequences but even those are done in slow languid fashion. Didn’t really resonate with me but somewhat better than average and worth seeing once.

Just like "Blade Runner", a director's cut of this movie should get rid of the cloying narration. And it should really be a cut! The whole Mayday scene should be left out as out of style - this is not a monster movie. Then the rest could be enjoyed as a beautifully photographed space exploration story accompanied by good music only. The scientific plot holes (the length of the journey, the time lapse for the messages, the weight on the Moon and Mars etc.) can be treated as poetic license. With the recent Trump suggestion to assign portions of the Moon to American companies for exploitation (with the right to defend the staked out territory), the attack on moon rovers in the future seems quite realistic.

The intent of this film seemed to be to focus on Pitt's character's emotional journey, but it all came across as cold and distant... Which is appropriate, but not all that compelling. Especially when he inhabits a world that seems interesting enough, but that is rarely fleshed out. Mars is colonized, the moon has pirates - every new environment he enters has some physical or existential threat! But it wants us to focus on the introspective, which didn't work for me. The same year brought us HIGH LIFE, a much more challenging and rewarding film. This plays like a combination of that film and GRAVITY, with a liberal dash of INTERSTELLAR. Any of these I would recommend before AD ASTRA.

I found this movie to be a little slow paced, with the content being more about the human experience than science fiction. For those who just like watching Brad Pitt movies, they should enjoy this film. If you were expecting an exciting space adventure, you may be disappointed.

Ad Astra Per Aspera.
I don't know, I really liked. 2019 sci-fi drama starring Brad Pitt that didn't do well commercially, was kind of ignored by critics, and, if the below comments are anything to go by, was disliked by quite a few people. It's too bad because it's a really interesting and visually brilliant film. It can be loosely grouped with other "serious" sci-fi films like "Gravity," "The Martian," and "Interstellar," although director James Grey, working on a bigger scale than he ever has before, described it as a cross between "2001" and "Apocalypse Now," which is pretty accurate. Pitt gives a subdued and brooding performance as an astronaut who goes looking for his father (Tommy Lee Jones) at the end of the universe, and there's a great, if slightly underused, supporting cast. I wish I'd seen this in the theater because, even on a TV, the production design, cinematography, and overall visual style are spectacular. One of the most ambitious and overlooked films of 2019. Score by Max Richter.
Bonus fact: Tommy Lee Jones and Donald Sutherland were both in "Space Cowboys."

Lots of glaring plotholes, this movie is terrible. I checked it out just before libraries closed due to COVID-19 and I really just want to return the darn thing. No temptation to rewatch it whatsoever.

24 quotes in IMDb; quite a few for a film with few dialogue. The two below is in IMDb already (thanks to the contributors):

I am active and engaged. I'm aware of my surroundings and those in my immediate sphere. I'm attentive. I'm focused on the essential... to the exclusion of all else. I'm unsure of the future... but I'm not concerned. I will rely on those closest to me. And I will share their burdens... as they share mine. I will live... and love.
He captured strange and distant worlds in greater detail than ever before. They were beautiful, magnificent... full of awe and wonder. But beneath their sublime surfaces... there was nothing. No love or hate. No light or dark. He could only see what was not there... and missed what was right in front of him.
