The beloved characters of Downton Abbey take to the big screen, and it turns out that they've got a major event to prepare for. After all, it's not every day that royalty makes an appearance. Of course, it's not long before tensions are running high. The property isn't even close to ready when it becomes clear that Carson the butler will need to come out of retirement to help run this sinking ship before it's too late.

I loved the series, so I was anxiously waiting for the movie. Although visually the movie was on par with the series, I thought the story lines weren't that interesting. The first half was disappointing and a snooze fest, but it got slightly more interesting near the end. I'm glad I didn't see th... Read More »

There are too many clichés to describe how perfect this movie is. Let’s just say being back in the masterful world created by Julian Fellowes makes you feel like everything is just as it should be with all of your favorite characters. Bring on the sequels!

Paychecks abound!!! I enjoyed the Downton series, but this film just feels like a deleted episode.

Everything it needs to be, it is.

Yes, you do have to already love Downton to love this film as you should. You can still enjoy it without having all the background on the characters’ lives, but you’ll be at quite a disadvantage and will likely be able to tell as much on some level. It would be worth your while to go back and watch the television series afterward, if you’ve not seen it already!

The continuity from television to film is well done here, both where the plot and the characters are concerned, and it’s upbeat and satisfying overall without making every detail of every character’s life perfect. It was great hearing all the music again, too. Downton’s theme, the Mary/Matthew theme, the Tom/Sybil theme—and don’t get me started on the exquisite costumes.

Whenever I rewatch the series now, I’ll be sure to include this in the cycle.

An excellent ending but a few strands were left untied so I hope there’ll be another movie!

I loved the parts where the royal servants were locked in their rooms!

Downton Abbey fan who loved this movie. My favorite moment Mr. Mosley's curtsey!

I really loved the Downton Abbey series, but I found this feature film to be disappointing overall. The plot was so very thin and very contrived and kind of dull! It was a treat to see the beloved and familiar Downton characters again. Everything and everyone looked beautiful. But the forced conflict between the palace staff and the Downton Abbey staff? Such an awful storyline! Ugh! Such unprofessional and childish behaviour on the part of everyone involved. It was painful to watch and it seemed 100% unrealistic that high level service staff would act like such unprofessional babies. I thought it was appalling that Anna of all people would be involved in the scheme to drug the royal chef to get him out the way. I found this entire plotline deplorable and I thought the behaviour of the Downton Staff wasn't endearing and delightful but was really unethical and reckless. And devoting screentime to a ridiculously mundane subplot about Lady Edith's dress? Really? It seemed so trite and mundane. And the Princess Mary storyline was also awful and seemed so contrived. A royal princess would be confiding in Tom like that? Ugh. So while it was fun to revisit Downton and see all the characters again, I actually found the movie a real letdown.

I was a big fan of the series, but this movie was disappointing. The parade and ballroom scenes were technically more complicated than anything that I can remember in the series, so kudos for that. The costume and set design were excellent as usual, but marred by poor lighting. The plot, if you could call it that, was trite and predictable, and the acting seemed like everyone was just tired of the SOS. The bonus features actors' roundtable had them joking that the movie could be the start of a franchise, much like Star Trek. One would hope not. Seasons 5 & 6, followed by this movie, exhibit a continuing downward trend in the creativity and wit that were the hallmark of the first 4 seasons. Overall, the movie was 2 hours of extremely forgettable much ado about nothing.

I really enjoyed the series, so I was excited to watch the movie. Overall, an ok movie. I liked seeing all my favourite characters again, and there were some lovely scenes and good character development, but the main plot of the Queen coming to Downton for dinner was a little boring and it felt like it dragged on.

Charming! I especially enjoyed listening to the actors discuss their roles in the Special Features. It was like watching and listening to modern day Crawleys.

It's probably the start of a movie franchise. Not as good as the original series.

This movie is a delight! Do not listen to the bah humbug reviews. Any Downton Abbey fan will love to revisit the Crawley family and staff in this wonderful continuation. I saw the movie in the theatres, people applauded at the ending. I watched it again at home, and enjoyed it all over again. I look forward to the next instalment!
