Simon Snow is back and he's coming to America!

The story is supposed to be over.

Simon Snow did everything he was supposed to do. He beat the villain. He won the war. He even fell in love. Now comes the good part, right? Now comes the happily ever after...

So why can't Simon Snow get off the couch?

What he needs, according to his best friend, is a change of scenery. He just needs to see himself in a new light.

That's how Simon and Penny and Baz end up in a vintage convertible, tearing across the American West. They find trouble, of course. (Dragons, vampires, skunk-headed things with shotguns.) And they get lost. They get so lost, they start to wonder whether they ever knew where they were headed in the first place.

With Wayward Son , Rainbow Rowell has written a book for everyone who ever wondered what happened to the Chosen One after he saved the day. And a book for everyone who was ever more curious about the second kiss than the first. It's another helping of sour cherry scones with an absolutely decadent amount of butter.

Come on, Simon Snow. Your hero's journey might be over - but your life has just begun.

Because this is a Rainbow Rowell book, of course I loved it. Technically, though....it wasn't completely necessary. Carry On was perfect. Wayward Son feels more like a novella and it isn't memorable for me in it's own right. But still, worth a read and Baz and Simon are still lovely.

Is this book quiiiiiiiite as delightful as Carry On, which is basically a perfect book? No. Is it the next best thing? Absolutely yes. Simon, Baz, and Penny head to America, go on a road trip, nearly get murdered by vampires -- all as you would expect, in other words. This was such a fun read, and it was so wonderful to be back inside this fictional universe once more. I like to call these books "fantasy for realistic fiction fans", since the relationships are just as important as the magic, and I wish Rainbow Rowell would write 5,000 more of these books (the good news is, there's going to be at least one more!).

#SnowBaz is back, only this time in America! This is a fantastic sequel to the amazing fantasy/romance novel Carry On, by Rainbow Rowell, which itself began as a type of fanfic homage to her novel, Fangirl. Slightly less romantic and more action-packed than Carry On, this story is a bit of a Neil Gaiman's American Gods-lite. But it's only lite because it's shorter and faster paced. It still magnificently weaves together myth and magic and our modern world. Highly recommended.
