Chinese-born, U.S.-raised Billi reluctantly returns to Changchun to find that, although the whole family knows their beloved matriarch, Nai-Nai, has been given mere weeks to live, everyone has decided not to tell Nai Nai herself. To assure her happiness, they gather under the joyful guise of an expedited wedding, uniting family members scattered among new homes abroad. As Billi navigates a minefield of family expectations and proprieties, she finds there's a lot to celebrate.

Women in Filmmaking

Over the last couple of years, there has been more of a push for women's representation on the big and little screens. While there have been strides made, there are still ways to go. Only 21% of women, as of 2019, were working in the top 100 grossing films. Black women, women of color, trans women, and disabled women are still underrepresented in directing, writing, and other… (more)

The film provides insight into traditional eastern culture. Not just the customs, but also the reasoning behind them. It highlights the difficulty of trying to adapt to western culture while maintaining an eastern identity. A person may get the best of both worlds, but may never feel completely belonging to either. The actors do a superb job expressing emotions and defining the personalities of their characters.
There was one scene that was poorly executed with the timing way off, making it seem too unnatural with people reacting when the granddaughter showed up. They all reacted BEFORE the grandmother was heard saying the granddaughter's name. If it was too much trouble to reshoot the scene, they could have simply dubbed the voice in earlier.
The library mis-categorized and labeled this as a comedy instead of a drama. Perhaps it was because of what may seem to be an absurd plot which could have been made into a comedy, but not here. Although there are some humor added to lighten the mood so it's not so depressing, 90% of this movie is a drama.
P.S. Does anyone know what the name of the piano music Billi was playing? I'd like to hear it in its entirety.

Did you know that in Asia, it is common for people who are about to die to be hidden from that fact? If someone was diagnosed with a disease and death was inevitable, only the family would know and they would hide it from him/her. The Farewell explores this from an American point of view and a Chinese point of view, as we see the story from the protagonist, a Chinese-American woman. It explains why it might be a good thing and why it might not. Along with that, we have a touching story about a woman whose grandma is about to die. Beautifully done. Loved this movie!

Much better than I expected. A drama based on true event. It displays sincere and raw emotions. This movie is worth it to watch.

Awkwafina rocks! I’ve loved her in everything I’ve seen her in, even when I didn’t particularly like the rest of the film (e.g. Crazy Rich Asians, although it was just that I’ve seen that similar story way too many times). Here she finally gets the lead and is just great. The rest of this film, with its family dynamics, was also really great.

There was lots to like in this film. This film really explores questions of life and death, family duty, family relationships, grief, loss, separation. etc. And it was fascinating to see another culture's attitudes about issues and see how they differed. It also had lots of funny bits. I thought Awkwafina was very good in the lead role. So, lots to like and the movie was definitely worth watching. Count me in, though, as someone who thought it was awful to hide the truth from Nai Nai! Overall I thought it was very good. But I was not a fan of the ending and I thought the ending kind of cheapened the message of the movie.

A good movie about different cultures, decisions about telling or not the truth and its future consequences.

This is a good movie, and it's well-acted. The story is moving and heart-felt, but there are a lot of subtitles to read. Sometimes that was a bit tedious.

chinese american} saying goodbye to a relative; cultural norms & beliefs that may obscure the truth; which makes it even harder; perhaps can learn from this how to say difficult words to people dying with the current losses: fire; deaths,
Great for all ages & cultures

Nai Nai: I walked the path of life and I have to say, you will face with difficulties. But you have to have an open mind. Don't be like a bull hitting his horns all over the walls of the room. Life isn't just about what you do, it's more about how you do it.

Only three quotes in IMDb this morning. Expect many more in the near future. Here is the "On the roof" joke:

So one day the wife goes out of town. And when she returns, the husband says... honey, the cat is dead. And she says "How can you tell me so abruptly like this?" You have to ease me into bad news." Like honey... the cat, he got on the roof.

So... now... a few months later the wife goes out of town again. And she returns, and the husband greets her again. But this time he learned his lesson. And as the wife comes through the door he says, "Honey, your mom, she got on the roof."

This 2019 movie "THE FAREWELL" was purposely made by an AMERICAN FILM COMPANY "Lionsgate".
But LIONSGATE "does not represent anything" from CHINESE/AMERICAN Film Publisher "A24"
