#1 New York Times best seller!

Booklist Editors' Choice 2015 - Youth!

Named a "Best Book of 2015" by Time Magazine, School Library Journal, Barnes & Noble, NPR, PopSugar, The Millions, and The News & Observer!

Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who's ever been chosen.

That's what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git , but he's probably right.

Half the time, Simon can't even make his wand work, and the other half, he starts something on fire. His mentor's avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there's a magic-eating monster running around, wearing Simon's face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here--it's their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon's infuriating nemesis didn't even bother to show up.

Carry On - The Rise and Fall of Simon Snow is a ghost story, a love story and a mystery. It has just as much kissing and talking as you'd expect from a Rainbow Rowell story - but far, far more monsters.

Opinion

From Library Staff

Rowell’s bestselling book Fangirl, where the protagonist writes fanfiction of a Harry Potter-spin-off called “Carry On”, became so popular that “Carry On” became it’s own series. (Also, one of my favorite books in the entire world.) Additionally, Rowell has publicly admitted to reading fanfiction... Read More »

No list of mine would ever be complete without me mentioning Carry On about a dozen times, because Simon & Baz are everything. They are my magical boys I love almost more than anything else in the world.

This book has everything I love: solid and supportive friendships, loads of magic & adventure, fascinating and complicated characters, some drama with a dragon, and a lovely Rainbow Rowell romance. This is my personal favorite book - one that I love so much, I think it is absolutely perfect. ... Read More »

This is officially my favorite book of all time! It plays on the Chosen One and The Villain archetypes in such gorgeous and unexpected ways.

This book honestly reads just like a Harry Potter fanfiction. Make a few character changes and this could have been posted to LiveJournal back in the day. But, that didn’t bother me at all. I found myself caught up in the story and the characters, and loving every second of it! I read all 500 pag... Read More »

Totally and completely one of the best books I have read in the longest time. I fell in love with Simon and Baz and my heart broke for the pair of them and what they have been through. No I shall wait for the sequel eagerly.

Such a good book. It totally drew me right in. It was one of those books I couldn't stop reading, not because of cliffhangers at the end of every chapter but because of how good it was. I especially liked how different chapters were from the perspectives of different characters. I felt that it added another dimension to the story. The only time this was a bit confusing was when it was a character we hadn't met and were given a bit of mystery. Everything wrapped up nicely and made sense in the end. I just started the sequel and I can tell that it's drawing me in the same way as this one.

I read this back in 2015, and reading it again is reminding me how much I loved it! I suggest reading this book before Fangirl, just because of the romantic build up. This is my favorite Rainbow Rowell book. The characters are relatable and the story really brings you in--I was completely invested when I read it, and I'm looking forward to the 2019 continuation, Wayward Sun.

There are some books that you finish, but you can't for the life of you, get not only the story, but also the moments out of your head and this book was one of these. I loved the time I spent with Simon, Baz, Penelope and Agatha and their story reverberated through my head several times and I even found myself going through the book again! I truly loved it!!

This is one of my favorite books and I've read it a few times. Very excited for the sequel!

When I first read this book, I think my only compliant/problem was that it's really a story within a story, so it takes a moment longer to get into it. Once I stopped thinking of Cath (Fangirl) writing this story, it flowed much better.

Rainbow Rowell is a goddess, and Baz is my spirit animal. Greatest book I've read in the last 12 hours.
*edit*

OH MY GOOGLE...... sequel is coming out sept. 24th 2019

I loved the snarky commentary between the characters in this novel. The cheeky relationship between the characters kept me flying though the pages of this book. It was light and fun, and just generally a great escape into a magical universe. Fan Girl meets Harry Potter in this action packed story about romance, magic, and friendship. Simon Snow is the "Chosen One", in this story, but he's just the worst. Everything just seems to not go is way in the magic world. But, he's got his vampire roommate, Baz, to both taunt and console him as he begrudgingly starts to develop feelings for him.

I really love this book. The drama between Baz and Simon is all relatable and Rowell describes a homosexual relationship very well. It's interesting to see how both Baz and Simon grow as characters both in their relationship and in life. The way Rowell pulls the resolution together is slightly confusing but overall, I like the way Simon defeats the Humdrum.

I didn't know how much I wanted queer wizard stories until I read this book. Can't wait to read the sequel!

If you are one of the "Drarry" shipping Potterheads, this is essentially that.
Was decent. I wouldn't read it again, but then I don't really like Harry potter, so.... :P

"I feel his magic. At first it's a buzz in my fingertips, then a rush of static up my arm. I try not to squirm...The static in my arm settles into a heavy thrum, like electrical sparks catching into flames. The discomfort goes away, even though the licking, flaming feeling gets stronger. This I know what to do with: This is fire...I laugh, and it comes out more good-natured than I mean it to. 'Snow. I think I could cast a sonnet right now'...I'm so full of power, I feel like I can see without opening my eyes. Like I could go nova if I wanted to and have my own galaxy. Is this what it's like to be Simon Snow? To have infinity in your chest pocket?"

"I'm still humming with his magic, and it's been hours since he pulled his hand away. He's thrown spells at me before, but this was different. This was like being struck by benevolent lightening. I felt scorched clean. Bottomless. No, that's not right, not bottomless. Centreless. Like I was bigger on the inside. Like I could cast any spell--back up any promise. At first it was as if Snow was giving magic to me. Sending it to me. But then the magic was just there. It was mine, in that moment, everything that was his."
