The Clock family, part of a race of little people called Borrowers, are forced to flee their ancestral home of Firbank Hall after they have been seen by humans. Determined to join Homily's brother, Hendreary, and his family, the Clocks make their way through fields and hedgerows--only to find Hendreary Clock's home deserted. Surviving out of doors is unnatural and difficult for the Borrowers, but they determine to do so, with a little help from a new friend. There are dangers, however, that they had not counted on, including a money-hungry gypsy who wants to sell the little people for money. Can anything stop the Clocks from being imprisoned for life?
