Fangirl meets Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda in this "sensitive and complex" ( BCCB ) coming-of-age novel from New York Times bestselling author Christina Lauren about two boys who fall in love in a writing class--one from a progressive family and the other from a conservative religious community.

Three years ago, Tanner Scott's family relocated from California to Utah, a move that nudged the bisexual teen temporarily back into the closet. Now, with one semester of high school to go, and no obstacles between him and out-of-state college freedom, Tanner plans to coast through his remaining classes and clear out of Utah.

But when his best friend Autumn dares him to take Provo High's prestigious Seminar--where honor roll students diligently toil to draft a book in a semester--Tanner can't resist going against his better judgment and having a go, if only to prove to Autumn how silly the whole thing is. Writing a book in four months sounds simple. Four months is an eternity.

It turns out, Tanner is only partly right: four months is a long time. After all, it takes only one second for him to notice Sebastian Brother, the Mormon prodigy who sold his own Seminar novel the year before and who now mentors the class. And it takes less than a month for Tanner to fall completely in love with him.

I have to say that I'm not normally a fan of romance as the main core theme, but I was absolutely drawn into this story. Finally, an original YA romance formula! Tanner Scott was openly bi-sexual until he moved to a school, in a state where it made things "easier" to go temporarily back in the closet. He learns that there's nothing "easy" about pretending to be someone he's not. He discovers that things can get very complicated, especially when he meets the love of his life; but his life is so spotlighted that it is not "as easy" to accept himself as he is, and envies Tanner.

Heartfelt, joyful, painful, euphoric, challenging, confusing, tragic, compassionate, hopeful.
A beautiful story of first love & all its complexity as told through the filter of a bisexual young adult from a complex religious background living in a predominantly Mormon community in Provo Utah.
Complicated family & friend dynamics give a fuller realization to the realities of the storyline for both Tanner & Sebastian.
Definitely one the best book written by Christina Lauren.

This is wonderful book. The book gives a very balanced view of what is at stake for both Tanner and Sebastian. The book shows that Sebastian is a believer and doesn’t want to leave his church, while also recognizing that his church’s anti-LGBT stance has hurt a lot of people. The relationship between Tanner and Sebastian is developed so beautifully.

Well written and authentic. A truly enjoyable read, but also gave me food for thought on bias and living our truth.

So I just wanna put out there it took me less than a day to read this. That's how good it is! The struggles that are faced in this book are so realistic, and they really moved me. I screamed and laughed. Tanner and Seb are a force to be reckoned with.

I didn't know what to expect going into this novel. I've read other books by Christina Lauren, and their most recent relases have just been okay. This book exceeded any expectations that i had. It was amazing! there were some super adorable moments that absolutely melted my heart. I did enjoy watching Sebastian struggling between his sexuality and religion. I know nothing about his religion so i can't attest to any accuracy in the book. overall it was fantastic and it moved me.

I genuinely enjoyed this book, and breezed through it in a day. It was fast-paced, funny, and relatable. I really enjoyed the family dynamics, and how our main character’s family was present rather than being mentioned and never seen again. I do think the relationship between our protagonist and his crush was a bit rushed, I felt as though it needed to be a bit slower-paced but nonetheless I was cheering for them throughout the entire book. I also really enjoyed the book writing class, especially as someone who wants to write a book one day. The main character was extremely relatable in the sense that his creativity in terms of his art was strongly influenced by his feelings, so much so that he couldn’t work on anything other than writing involving his feelings in a way.
