Iconoclastic detective Jackson Brodie returns in a triumphant new novel about secrets, sex, and lies
Jackson Brodie has relocated to a quiet seaside village, in the occasional company of his recalcitrant teenage son and an aging Labrador, both at the discretion of his ex-partner Julia. It's picturesque, but there's something darker lurking behind the scenes.
Jackson's current job, gathering proof of an unfaithful husband for his suspicious wife, is fairly standard-issue, but a chance encounter with a desperate man on a crumbling cliff leads him into a sinister network-and back across the path of his old friend Reggie. Old secrets and new lies intersect in this breathtaking novel by one of the most dazzling and surprising writers at work today.

Book has a very complex & tightly woven plot with a huge cast of characters. The story was engrossing & timely.
Atkinson is British. I’m not. Most pages in this book had a cultural reference that baffled me. None of them interfered with my ability to follow the plot, but I know there was a layer of richness that I missed.
Near the end of the book, the entire tone of the prose changed. Instead of a story being told, it felt like the printed words at the end of a movie telling what happened to everybody. This last 20 or 30 pages just felt strange.
I liked that there was more than one mystery in the story. One of them, we know about but the good guys don’t. That made an interesting contrast to the rest of the mysteries that we solved together.

The long-awaited return of PI Jackson Brodie has him involved in events that involve webs of wrongdoing, including sex trafficking. Despite the seamy subject, Brodie’s investigations always make me smile.

Atkinson amazes telling Brodie’s story mixing incidents and characters from previous adventures as well as linking all the many storylines in this one. I’m always so impressed. So, so glad Jackson Brodie’s back.

The heroes here are the least likely (and most likable) characters - downtrodden women and sensitive men. There's lots going on in this terrific mystery - wealth and influence and human trafficking, women who have learned to be survivors, and varied family relationships.

After too long a wait, Jackson Brody is back and in fine form. Last autumn, I attended a packed reading given by Kate Atkinson and the auditorium filled with cheers when the author announced she had just that week finished a new Brody novel.

Our excited expectations have been met--"Big Sky" crackles with Atkinson's trademark wit, labyrinthine plotting and characters that we either love, or love to hate. I've enjoyed everything Atkinson has ever written and this novel is no exception. Highly recommended!

It had taken a while for it to dawn on Vince that he might be a suspect. When it did dawn, it seemed such an astonishing idea that he tripped up in the middle of the answer to one of their questions... 'I sleep alone so no, no one can verify my alibi.' Oh, God __ I sleep alone. It sounded so pathetic. 'Alibi?' the inspector said placidly. 'No one's talking about alibis, Mr Ives. Only you.' pg. 150
