This was definitely a fun watch. Watched this on an HD projector and the whole wall was filled with the image to create the IMAX-at-home effect. Took about two viewings to really get into the movie. The thing that struck me the most was how it had these moments where the pacing would be at a level where you feel comfortable, then the rug would be pulled out of you and you have a whole load of action that follows. Great visuals. Would definitely borrow this again at some point in the future.

I don't usually watch this genre of movie. It was intense and visually appealing. The story did itself justice by beginning in the correct place and explaining how Aquaman came to be. The ending was just what I had hoped for and although it seemed long and drawn out in a few places, it was definitely worth the time invested. The beautiful red-haired princess seemed to me to be soooooooooo much more the star than the Aquaman in many places. Not suitable for small children due to way too much killing and violence. But worth the viewing for older patrons.

You know, I heard about how this movie is a"Actually, pretty good" because it embraces the cheese of it. Idunno. After finally having seen it, I agree to a certain extent, but the thing that I noticed most of all is that the humor in this movie - every single joke, is just flat lame. It tries to be cheesy and goofy, and badass, but all except for the last one a bit, are a swing and a miss. Mamoa is pretty charming and saves it a bit, but what's her name, who plays Mera is, I'm sorry to say, wholly untalented. She has nothing but looks. Those looks are great, but it really shows the depth of the movie. I was kinda looking forward to the end, where I assumed it would be a giant CG-orama battle, and it was - absolutely - but by the time it came, I just flat out didn't care anymore. Oh, and if you don't get how cheesy it was, here's a tidbit - The LITERALLY have an octopus playing the drums. When I saw that, I couldn't even laugh - it was so blatant and ripe-for-memes... just one of the many shudders. And you can see the entire movie coming a mile away - it's the Hero's Journey, through and through - they milked that goat dry. A couple of saving graces though - Mamoa is really not too shabby and pretty fun to watch. Wilson is not bad - not his best role, but not too bad. And it was nice to see Dafoe NOT end up being a bad guy in this - to me, that's a win! Unfortunately, Kidman didn't work here. She just seemed bland... and the Manta guy, although he looked cool as hell, was essentially a B-movie villain.

Fun to watch a good standalone movie for his character you get to know more about him.

A disjointed plot, cheesy dialogue and a run time of 2 hrs 23 min made this movie seem like it would never, ever end. Aquaman relied so heavily on CGI effects it felt more like a video game narrative than a feature film. To top it off, Willem Dafoe in a topknot and costumes that looked like rejects from the Age of Disco were just too ridiculous for words. To echo another commenter,, so bad.

Thirty minutes in I realized the movie wasn't going to live up to its hype the way I had hoped it would. It satisfied with plenty of plucky humor and aquatic action, but the plot construction and character development were rather cliche. The whole film is more a CGI-fueled tour of Atlantis and other fantasy kingdoms than anything else (think an underwater version of "Valerian"), but I still enjoyed the ride.

There is a lot of focus on Arthur Curry/Aquaman being the one to "unite the worlds," but not much internal conflict - perfectly fine, considering this is an action movie, and that I am biased from having watched "Throne of Atlantis" first (see below). Sometimes the characters fall flat, like they were just thrown in (particularly love interest Mera and archenemy Black Manta, who is sidelined here in favor of half-brother Orm as the main antagonist). As a viewer familiar with the DCU, I feel they were added mainly just to check all the boxes off Aquaman's origin story. At least this means future DCEU films won't be so heavy on backstory.

I find the animated movie "Throne of Atlantis" more riveting than this live-action version. A note here that "Throne" is not for young children (violence) or those unfamiliar with the Justice League (other superheroes play prominent roles).

I have one last grievance: Mera's eyes glow whenever she uses her hydrokinesis. I canNOT emphasize how irritating it is to see this trope overused -- both by Marvel and by DC, but especially by DC in this feature.

I loved it. There were a few parts that seemed weird, but all in all it's a great family movie.

The origin of Aquaman, his familial ties to the world on land and sea. Felt overly saturated with lengthy CGI action scenes but with imaginative props/creatures in the world of Atlantis. It does not help with some of the actors out of their environment in action hero roles.

Been enjoying films directed/written/produced by James Wan, outstanding resume per IMDb:

--- Australian film producer, screenwriter and film director of Malaysian Chinese descent. He is widely known for directing the horror film Saw (2004) and creating Billy the puppet. Wan has also directed Dead Silence (2007), Death Sentence (2007), Insidious (2010), The Conjuring (2013), Furious 7 (2015) and Aquaman (2018).

--- First Asian director to have two films (Furious 7 and Aquaman) make a billion dollars at the box office.

--- First Australian director to have a film make one billion dollars at the box office.

My wife didn't want to see "2001" again, because she remembered it ended with a half hour light show that didn't make much sense. So we saw this one, instead, and it ended with a half hour light show that didn't make much sense ...

Lots of CGI effects and battle scenes, which unfortunately are mostly chaotic. And the film is way too long at close to 2.5 hrs. So as an escapism/fantasy film it pales compared to the Avenger series. Go for it for the eyes candy only.
