I completely agree with some of the previous commentators. The costumes, settings, and some of the camera work were stunning, but the story is just trash. I really doubt whether Queen Anne was a homosexual. I may be wrong, I will do some real historical research on her, but it seems with over a dozen (or more) pregnancies, Anne was probably sexually normal. As homosexuality becomes more and more normalized, I suppose we will see more of these travesties of history, where past realities are subsumed for modern sexual tastes. Such a waste of amazing talented actors, such as Olivia Coleman. I wonder if these gifted actors just have to hold their noses and take parts in movies like this one because the contract pays the bills and some work is better than no work. I think Glenn Close was robbed of her Oscar; Olivia Coleman is a master of the grunt and grimace, but she sometimes seemed to be in the supporting role in this film. After all, the title of the film refers to the supporting star, not the Queen. I love the movies and I must watch hundreds a year. I watch most of them to the end, but this one I switched off right after I had to endure the 'Queen of England' say of her new sexual toy something about tongues being inside her. Yuck, not in my house, thanks. In all fairness, there is warning about the coarseness of the film on the disc box, so parents of impressionable children, take caution. I'm grandmother age and I'm turned off. I think I would prefer a real historical documentary on this time in English history. Behind this trashy bit of fluff is the really unfortunate view that women can't really handle positions of power and politics without using sex to get ahead. So while this film may have meant to demonstrate women in high places, coping with being the boss in a man's world, balancing being both politically active and procreatively active, all it's doing is demeaning the women whose stories are being told. Unfortunately, a lot of people get their 'history' from the movies and who knows how many will come away thinking this queen was essentially deranged and demented.

I have no idea why anyone would think that there is anything comical about this movie. There is nothing funny about it in the least. It is actually a serious drama. As such, it is also confusing to portray Queen Anne as a woman who appears to have early onset dementia. She did not. The acting and production values are very good. However, I found the movie boring and absurd, but not absurd in a humorous way. Had they made a movie about the actual political situation in England during the reign of Queen Anne it would have been much more interesting.

On a recommendation from a friend, I watched this film. My initial reaction was, “Oh no, a period piece.” Overall, I found it entertaining, and burst out laughing a number of times. It was comical, absurd, and ridiculous. The scenes filmed with a fish-eye lens were initially distracting but lend to the skewed perception of the characters and storytelling. Pretty costumes and sets. Note that this film is probably not for those who take themselves or British dramas too seriously.

Quite a wicked little film..if you are offended by sexual overtones and will led English humour then stay clear. I wish Olivia is Coleman had more to do especially as an oscar winner for lead actress. It is a story about two subordinates vying for the affection of their queen and at times rather vulgar in a very humorous British way. Not for everyone but a different kind of period piece that is done very well.

Dark and depressing with themes of revenge and ass-kissing. Really a terrible movie. This is not a comedy. It's also quite dull.

The first hour was fairly interesting and the 2nd hour dragged on and on and on.

WORST choreography in the history of film making. The sets were beyond beautiful and so rich and detailed--so the directer ruined some of them with a fish-eye lens. The acting was bad--but mostly because the script was unbearably badly written. If you are a nasty, mean-girl teen who hates all things British and just want to say horrid things about England's aristocracy, this is the movie for you. Otherwise, I suggest you don't waste your time on it. (Homophobes should not make movies in which they re-imagine history to make long dead people gay. And how did it become okay to make fun of people who suffer multiple crippling diseases?)

We went to see this film and hated it. Could not understand the Oscar nomination.

This movie was hardly comical, and I wish they had given a better description of what the movie was about. I turned it off when Queen Anne and Lady Sarah began a sexual relationship. Clearly not my kind of movie, it was disgusting!

40 good quotes in IMDb. The writing is edgy and quirky as this one:

Abigail: Have you come to seduce me, or rape me?
Masham: I am a gentleman.
Abigail: So, rape then.
