The instant #1 New York Times bestseller

"An unforgettable--and Hollywood-bound--new thriller... A mix of Hitchcockian suspense, Agatha Christie plotting, and Greek tragedy."
-- Entertainment Weekly

The Silent Patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman's act of violence against her husband--and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive.

Alicia Berenson's life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London's most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.

Alicia's refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations--a search for the truth that threatens to consume him....

Stars: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Everything you have heard is true...you simply cannot put this book down!

Theo is a psychotherapist. With hopes that he will be the doctor who can finally get through to infamous murderer Alicia Berenstein, he accepts a job at the Grove psychiatric facility. Alicia has been in the Grove for six years, and has remained silent since the day she murdered her husband. Why does she maintain her silence? Why won’t she speak up for herself? What caused her to break down so dramatically and violently? Theo is determined to find the truth.

Theo breaks rules, ruffles feathers and disobeys a lot of good advice. And he just may lose the person who means the most to him… Will finding the answers really be worth it??

Pros: Fast paced doesn’t cover it. Short, concise chapters are interspersed with diary entries which are an ingenious way to hook the reader in...completely.

Cons: Nothing too groundbreaking here...and I can’t say I loved the ending ...felt like a bit of a trick, but it was still very enjoyable.

Well written, fast paced and shocking.

WOW!! Just wow. Twists and turns and red herrings and then....bam the denouement!!. Wasn’t expecting that. Also interesting insights into psychotherapy and how childhood affects the adult. Don’t know why he was treating her, a step up the ladder if he was successful, he felt sorry for her, hubris?? But what a great read.

Oh but I do love it when a novel turns all my pre-conceived interpretations upside-down and provides a completely unexpected and shocking ending. The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides is that psychological thriller. Alicia Berenson is a famous artist married to Gabriel, a fashion photographer. All seems well until Gabriel arrives home late one night and Alicia shoots him in the face five times. She is found at the scene, having attempted to slit her wrists. She will never speak again. Having been found too unstable to go to prison, she is remanded to a secure forensic unit where she is heavily drugged. And that is where Theo Faber, a criminal psychotherapist, with dysfunction in his early years, attempts to get to the bottom of Alicia's own dysfunction and the truth about her husband's murder. The rest you must read for yourself. You will not regret picking up this novel. Highly recommended.

Destined to be one of 2019's top psychological thrillers, this story about a curious doctor and his traumatized, silent patient who is holding secrets is deftly written and packs a punch that makes the twist in GONE GIRL nod in approval. Don't miss this.
