An instant New York Times bestseller

The new standalone novel from bestselling author Jasper Fforde

Every Winter, the human population hibernates.

During those bitterly cold four months, the nation is a snow-draped landscape of desolate loneliness, devoid of human activity.

Well, not quite .

Your name is Charlie Worthing and it's your first season with the Winter Consuls , the committed but mildly unhinged group of misfits who are responsible for ensuring the hibernatory safe passage of the sleeping masses.

You are investigating an outbreak of viral dreams which you dismiss as nonsense; nothing more than a quirky artefact born of the sleeping mind.

When the dreams start to kill people, it's unsettling.

When you get the dreams too, it's weird.

When they start to come true, you begin to doubt your sanity.

But teasing truth from the Winter is never easy: You have to avoid the Villains and their penchant for murder, kidnapping and stamp collecting; ensure you aren't eaten by Nightwalkers, whose thirst for human flesh can only be satisfied by comfort food; and sidestep the increasingly less-than-mythical WinterVolk.

But so long as you remember to wrap up warmly, you'll be fine.

I enjoyed this book, so so much! A fantastic journey filled with mystery, interesting characters, and a world a step away from our own filled with rich details and a history to make it almost real (if you can look past the mythical creatures, almost charming “zombies” and borderline obsessive junk food eating, which I strongly encourage you do, as the story is most definitely enriched by their presence).
I feel like there are many parallels to be made with the current political and social landscape we all now live in, but to be honest I just loved the compelling story and enjoyed escaping into a brilliant page turner of a book.
This was a first Fforde novel for me, and I’m relishing the prospect of diving into his back catalogue.

The long winter months have turned bitterly and deadly cold. Blizzards, ice, and snow cover the world and force the majority of the surviving population to take cover indoors in a long coma, dead to the world, inside nuclear silos and hotels designed to keep people safe during the dangerous winter. Only a few foolhardy souls stay awake for the winter. New Winter Console Charlie Worthing, a deformed and smart young man is tackling his first winter and sleep mysteries are everywhere. The line between sleeping and waking has never been more blurred and Hybertech, the worlds largest coma inducing corporation, is up to no good. Fforde is witty and dry as he takes us through a futuristic world where myths and dreams can come true in winter. This novel is a great mix of adventure, humor, and sci-fi paced perfectly to make the 400 page novel flow.

I always know that Jasper Fforde will take the world I know and stretch it in new directions, and yet it’s always a gorgeous surprise to see how naturally he does it. With his trademark wit and humor, Fforde gives us a frozen, dangerous world and an imperfect but earnest hero bound to protect the Hibernating populace but caught between a duelling pair of powerful women in the mysterious Sector Twelve.
