Welcome to Marwen is based on the life and artwork of Mark Hogancamp, a hate-crime survivor who turned to art as a form of therapy. In 2000, to help him cope with the fallout of an assault that saddled him with crippling psychological trauma, he created a fictional, 1:6 scale World War II town christened Marwencol, populated with dolls inspired by his real-life friends, neighbors, and even the men who attacked him. (from artnet news) Brilliantly done!

I really wanted to like this movie. The doll animation was amazing and fun to watch, but the movie isn't so much about the real life actors, but about the story of the dolls.

Didn’t know anything about this movie, and at first were intrigued with the way it was done, but found it wore thin and lost interest.

Robert Zemeckis' method of animating actors is the perfect way to tell this story. It helps us see what Mark Hogancamp is thinking and feeling, and reveals the tragedy that he went through. Sweet and heartfelt.

Steve Carell shows us what a great actor he is and that he can do MUCH more than comedy. The character is very sad but understandable after having been nearly killed by a bunch of homophobic thugs. The movie was quite disturbing but, again understandable and, I believe, the point of the theme. Steve C. was really the only good actor in it but he carried it off beautifully.

Disappointing to the point that I couldn't finish watching. I wanted to find something redeemable about the film but found only the idea was good, execution however is fatally flawed.

Not at all what we were expecting. This is about a guy's bizarre coping mechanism of dolls and sets. Not a family film. It felt like we were watching an adult male play with barbies for his personal fetishes. :0

It had ALL the potential in the world to be a hit, and it was wasted.
This is one of those movies that "grows legs" and walks away from the director's control. And surprisingly enough, the director is Robert Zemeckis.
Problems with the writing and general treatment of the themes. Bad, stiff dialogue. At points, even the editing is slow... some pauses that should had been shorten. Too bad.

Great performance by Steve, but his character is extremely creepy. Would not recommend for anyone under 13 because of adult concepts. The description fails to mention that he is attacked for wearing womens clothing items.
