An intimate, powerful, and inspiring memoir by the former First Lady of the United States In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America—the first African-American to serve in that role—she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare. In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world's most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whose story inspires us to do the same.

I can understand why this is a best seller, exceeding in sales. I loved her well-planned, inspiring, and real memoir stories which were simple and yet profound, as the intelligent, loved, first class lady. 5 stars.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Michelle Obama's honesty and openness made her life come alive in a refreshing way. I have always wondered what life as a parent in the White House would be like. She was honest about her personality and shared her flaws, her process of growth, and her strengths in her various roles. After reading this, I appreciate those who enter public life with all of its challenges and disappointments even more, especially when they do so with the aim of improving whatever they can. A big thank you to the Obama's!

Thanks also to the Seattle library for providing this as a Peak Pick. How nice not to have to wait to read this wonderful book!

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to her audiobook. I found that I was binge-listening to it, looking forward to each chapter as it went along! I totally give it a 5-star review!

I admire her so much, especially considering that she never wanted a political life.

I was very much looking forward to this book. It was a huge disappointment and filled with self-absorbed, tedious, boring detail that isn't terribly informative except for the bits about Chicago's late mayor Harold Washington.

Since I'm from Chicago and was around when Michelle launched her legal career, I was shocked that her Sidley & Austin mentor Jewel LaFontante wasn't mentioned. Jewel opened ALL the doors Michelle sailed through, and her son raised the money which allowed Barack to become president.

I did come away from the book with elevated respect for her parents.

This is such a good, unbelievably heart-warming, sweet, tender story that it made me just plain sad. Someone could be so incredible, so determined, so full of grit, to overcome obstacles, like her husband, to become someone so successful seems impossible. How many other Michelle Obamas are there out there that we'll never get to enjoy?

I have to admit I could not finish this book. Life kept interrupting. By that I mean, her husband isn't president. Instead, some other guy is undoing lots of the good the Obamas did and it was just too much going from the beautiful hope in this book to the hopelessness that is happening outside of it.

Maybe I'll return to it when we return to a country that doesn't lock up little kids.

The voice of our First Lady, Michelle Obama, comes through loud and clear in this engaging memoir. Beginning with her childhood in the Southside of Chicago and ending with the inauguration of her husband's successor, Mrs. Obama lets the reader into her world as she saw it. While her husband's activities as a community organizer have been well known for some time, we discover that after deciding that the practice of law was not for her, she too became engaged in her community through the University of Chicago as well as a Chicago medical center. She was never particularly interested in politics and forcefully rejects any idea that she should ever run for office, but was selfless enough to agree to her husband's following through on his political ambitions. Many women (including me) will see parts of themselves in her story. Highly recommended.

I always wanted to be a fly on the wall when President Obama told Mrs. Obama that he wanted to run for President of the United States, and this book has allowed me into her personal thoughts and concerns on the matter. Becoming is an honest and thought provoking look into the life of a strong educated woman, and mother who happened to be one of our country's most graceful and influential first ladies. I loved it and appreciated its timeliness and Mrs. Obama's inspirational love for the U.S., community, education, children, and of course, her husband.

"What nobody tells you is that miscarriage happens all the time, to more women than you'd ever guess, given the relative silence around it. I learned this only after I'd mentioned I'd miscarried to a couple of friends, who responded by heaping me with love and support, and also their own miscarriage stories. It didn't take away the pain, but in unburying their own struggles, they steadied me during mine." - Chapter 13
