The enchanting and bloodthirsty sequel to the New York Times bestselling novel The Cruel Prince.
You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring.
The first lesson is to make yourself strong.
After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her younger brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.
When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.

I read the first book and I instantly fell in love with it. I wanted to read this book so bad, now that I have its better that I imagined thrilling and plot twisting. Honestly keeps you guessing a real page turner! I can’t wait for the next one I hope she can tell her true feelings in the next book.

I am a bit tardy to the Holly Black party but I am so glad I finally arrived! THIS. SERIES. IS. FANTASTIC! So many twists and turns. Scheming, plotting, backstabbing, treachery, deceit, this book has it all and yet leaves you wanting more.

I am very particular about how the Other Crowd is portrayed in fiction and am pleased to say that Holly Black knows her stuff. I really enjoy the fact that they have created a world with a diverse group of characters, including many lesser-known Fey.

I loved this book! It was a great sequel to The Cruel Prince. I love the author's writing style and descriptive language. The plot is completely unpredictable and unlike anything I have ever read. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!

Found it a slow going in the beginning... then it draws the reader in.

My expectations were pretty high after the first book, and they were exceeded! God! Reading this was such a wild ride, and I loved every second of it. That ending was great and I just can't find it in my heart to hate Cardan. I know that he loves Jude and I can't wait for them to just figure their shit out.
My one wish for the next book is that Jude finally gets to talk about all the things she'd been through in this book instead of keeping it all bottled up, can't wait for it to be released!

I read this for the "A Book Published In 2019" part of my 2019 reading challenge. I found it started a little slow, but Jude and Cardan were fantastic together and I was really surprised by the ending.

Holly Black is truly a magical genius. Every aspect of The Wicked King (as well as it's predecessor, The Cruel Prince) is finely crafted: the characters are all complex with unique personalities, the plot is full of unexpected twists and turns, and the world of Faerie is described in vivid detail for a completely immersive experience. I highly recommend the audiobooks, as the narrator Caitlin Kelly is fantastic! She seamlessly creates distinct voices for each character and puts so much emotion into her narration. Warning: the cliffhanger at the end is a killer. Now to wait for the final book, The Queen of Nothing, to be released... Oh, the agony!

What I like about what Holly Black is doing with this series is that we as the readers do not get what we want, or at the very least what we expect. We expect the romance, we expect it to overcome obstacles and other desires, and we expect it to be the forefront of the story. And while the love story is still part of the plot, it's not what drives it forward.

It's a great take, and it leaves you frustrated. The cliffhanger at the end of this book is enraging because I have to wait for the release of the next before I find out what happens and that is still months away. BUT what this book does is show growth in the characters. They are all changing from the people they were in The Cruel Prince in very interesting ways. Some not as much as others, and if I could get into Cardan's head, I'd be very, very happy because he intrigues me so.

I love and adore the faerie world Holly has created here, and think that this was an excellent installment in the series. A good link between the first and the third. One that shows that even if you win the first time, you might not come out on top the next.

Dark and full of intrigue, the Wicked King is not something you'll put down easily. It kept me guessing till the end. I still hated Jude's romance with Cardan, but whatever.

"The three of you have one solution to every problem. Murder. No key fits every lock.” Cardan gives us all a stern look, holding up a long-fingered hand with my stolen ruby ring still on one finger. “Someone tries to betray the High King, murder. Someone gives you a harsh look, murder. Someone disrespects you, murder. Someone ruins your laundry, murder."
