THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

An unforgettable family saga from Markus Zusak, the storyteller who gave us the extraordinary bestseller THE BOOK THIEF, lauded by the New York Times as "the kind of book that can be life-changing."

"One of those monumental books that can draw you across space and time into another family's experience in the most profound way." -- The Washington Post

"Mystical and loaded with heart, it's another gorgeous tearjerker from a rising master of them." -- Entertainment Weekly

"Devastating, demanding and deeply moving." -- Wall Street Journal

The breathtaking story of five brothers who bring each other up in a world run by their own rules. As the Dunbar boys love and fight and learn to reckon with the adult world, they discover the moving secret behind their father's disappearance.

At the center of the Dunbar family is Clay, a boy who will build a bridge--for his family, for his past, for greatness, for his sins, for a miracle.

The question is, how far is Clay willing to go? And how much can he overcome?

Written in powerfully inventive language and bursting with heart, BRIDGE OF CLAY is signature Zusak.

This is a powerful story. Zusak uses spare, expressive prose to tell the Dunbar family story. The story begins with the beginning of the writing. Then we follow the saga from two separate vantage points that converge before the end. For those like me who love a pithy turn of phrase, this is the book for you. At times I found myself rereading passages to savor them and absorb all the nuances. This is not a beach read, but it is well worth the time. Although the setting is not as compelling as in "The Book Thief" I believe this work to be as notable in its own way.

Meet the Dunbar boys - Matthew, Rory, Henry, Clayton & Thomas. "A family of ramshackle tragedy". That sets the tone for the whole book. It is a tragic and beautiful story about a family that I grew to love. But let me tell you what expect. This is not an easy read. It is not something you can casually and comfortably read. It is a bit of hard work, especially in the beginning when you won't know what is going on. The writing will challenge you. It is often fragmented and poetic. It will force you to concentrate and you'll find yourself re-reading sentences to make sure you got it right. It is not at all linear. However you do get used to the style and I grew to love it. I really can't imagine it being written any other way without diminishing the effect of the narrative. The relationships in this book touched me deeply, both the romantic relationships and the connection between the Dunbar brothers. This holds the status of my favourite book of the year and is a real labour of love from the author. I feel like he must have left a little piece of himself in the pages. If you have the patience and time to do right by this book, I would highly recommend it.

How do I begin? It's beautiful and warm. I don't know what it is about Zusak's books that always make me want to start over as soon as I finish, to stew in the families he's built. Honestly, the first 150 pages or so were quite hard to get through. After that though, after he lets go of being overly lyrical and vague, I love it, so much. Beautiful. So glad I read it.

A Must-Read Young Adult pick. It’s been more than a decade since Zusak brought us "The Book Thief." Get in line for this highly anticipated novel about five brothers, a disappearance, and, of course, a bridge!
