A husband's secret life, a wife's new beginning: escape to the Caribbean with #1 New York Times bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand.

Irene Steele shares her idyllic life in a beautiful Iowa City Victorian house with a husband who loves her to sky-writing, sentimental extremes. But as she rings in the new year one cold and snowy night, everything she thought she knew falls to pieces with a shocking phone call: her beloved husband, away on business, has been killed in a helicopter crash. Before Irene can even process the news, she must first confront the perplexing details of her husband's death on the distant Caribbean island of St. John.

After Irene and her sons arrive at this faraway paradise, they make yet another shocking discovery: her husband had been living a secret life. As Irene untangles a web of intrigue and deceit, and as she and her sons find themselves drawn into the vibrant island culture, they have to face the truth about their family, and about their own futures.

Rich with the lush beauty of the tropics and the drama, romance, and intrigue only Elin Hilderbrand can deliver, Winter in Paradise is a truly transporting novel, and the exciting start to a new series.

This was not a good book. I generally try to keep my comments to the positive, but the book was poorly edited and I am not the only reader who spied glaring errors with the wrong character name in the sentence. Didn't anyone proof read this????
The plot caught my eye, and I have read previous novels by this author, and the sunny beach photo promised a nice read. Instead I did not like any of the characters, couldn't warm to them at all and the ending was just, the ending. Would not recommend!

A generic my husband did me wrong story. I found two errors. A shame it wasn't better edited. Apparently the author can't remember who she's writing about. On page 201 and I quote "Huck knows that their relationship went on longer than 3 years. Rosie met the Invisible Man right after Rosie died - - 5 years ago." It's quite interesting that this miraculous Rosie was able to meet a man after she died. It should have read "Rosie met the Invisible Man right after Leanne died."

A similar problem exists on page 206. The two brothers are chatting. "What kind of errand" Baker asks. "The only kind of errand there is" Baker says. I doubt that Baker answered his own question. It should have read "what kind of errand?" Baker asks. "The only kind of errand there is," Cash says.

The author brags about being a graduate of the Iowa writers School. I seriously doubt that. Graduates of the Iowa Writers School are real pros like TC Boyle and John Irving who would be horrified the readers could easily find errors this simplistic. The editors should also be ashamed of such sloppiness.

Elin Hilderbrand’s first in her new series, Winter in Paradise, takes a break from cozy Nantucket and whisks us away to sunny St. John!

Irene Steele is the main character that has it all. We know the one- fantastic husband, kids, the job, and home. That perfect facade has cracks, though, when her children are grown and don’t need her as much, her husband is distant, and her job is pushing retirement. The cracks shatter when she receives the late night phone call no one wants. Her husband has been found dead under mysterious circumstances. He was found far away on the island of St. John…

Irene flies to St. John with her two sons to figure things out, and she is confronted with more unexpected news: her husband has a second family.

Even with all the deceit staring her in the face, Irene won’t give up until she finds out the truth.

Warning for readers: This is the first book of a trilogy. Although there is a disclaimer in the second novel that the books can be enjoyed at "stand alone" books, IMHO that is not true.

I've enjoyed many of Elin Hilderbrand's novels so I checked out her latest book, "What Happens in Paradise". The disclaimer states it's the second book in a trilogy, that all the books can be read as "stand alone" books, but for a more enhanced story, the reader should start with the first book, "Winter in Paradise". So, I got that and read it before starting "What Happens...". I really enjoyed the story but was quite surprised that there was a huge "cliffhanger" at the end of the first book, since it was allegedly a stand alone book. Then I read the second book and was even more frustrated with another dangling ending. Now readers have to wait a year between books to finish the story with the third book, "Troubles in Paradise". I enjoyed the story but feel a bit duped and disappointed. After reading reviews on other sites I'm not the only one who believes Hilderbrand pulled a marketing scheme on her readers. She's a great writer and doesn't need to trick her readers into buying/reading three separate books.

I stumbled upon this book because of the cover, anything to do with the beach during winter months just makes me happy. This story is so unbelievable and the characters are supposed to be adults but act like 8th graders when it comes to love, attraction and decisions, so unrealistic. It definitely reads like an advertisement for St. John, I guess that was the goal? I'm going to read the 2nd book to see if it ties up loose ends and maybe the characters will have more depth?

Irene Steele is living the "good life" until she learns her husband has been killed in a plane crash while away on business. Irene discovers that things are not always as they seem... First book in the Paradise trilogy.

Enjoyed this book, refreshing new characters and setting. Just be advised it is a trilogy. Pleasant surprise but also leaves one wanting more. The next book is on order by the library.
