The Year in Miniature

One of my favorite small wonders of Lawrence is the architectural model of the University of Kansas campus, currently located on the 3rd Floor of the Kansas Union. My kids love it as much as I do, so we worried when it disappeared earlier this year. Much to our relief, it reappeared a few months later with a much needed update. Gone now is McCollum Hall, of course, but there are a bunch of… (more)

An absolutely superb, gripping horror/suspense film. The setup takes a little bit of time, but the payoff is completely worth it. It is a grueling, slow burn throughout the film. Toni Collette puts on an astounding performance as her character slowly loses her grip on reality, and the narrative i... Read More »

Weak characters. Plot doesn't make sense at all. Not scary but bizarre.

A very surprising horror movie about witches! Witches are scary!

This movie is a devastating masterpiece of horror. Although there is a supernatural element to the film the horror of the film is all based around a devastating family tragedy and the fragmenting of those familial relationships.

Ari Aster's debut is a solid win. He winds you up in one direction only to subvert your expectations in the first act. It is an excellent film!

Beyond the fact that I would happily go 25 years without seeing another horror movie with little kids drawing disturbing pictures (seriously...ENOUGH), I thought this was a really emotionally interesting film, & frightening in all the right ways, sort of a cross between "Rosemary's Baby" & "Religulous". Before any real evidence of the supernatural has made itself known, the film paints a powerful portrait of the very *natural horror of those tragedies that befall people & families in the course of their lives, or the ways that death separates us agonizingly from the ones we love. Also a huge round of applause for the sound design team on this one, holy cow. Bonus material: "I decided to be a lil' stinker & buy all my Lord of Hell doll-making materials from Hobby Lobby!" CR

Terrible, boring movie. The entire movie barely made any sense. Almost none of the characters were likeable as they were either rude, insane or just extremely unlikable. You didn’t feel for any of the characters and it literally was only interesting at like 2 parts and only for about 30 seconds for each. Most of the movie was just boring or you were like if you do that obviously nothing goods going to happen. Overall unlikable movie, don’t watch.

This movie was good I thought it was more psychological than scary I mean it was a little scary near the end but again I have to say it was more psychological than scary. Still otherwise very good.

I gave it a solid 4.5. It was really scary. A slow buildup. But scary! The "B" actors all did a nice job. The general theme is like the Exorcist, but it isn't about a exorcism, that is all I am going to say. It is a great choice for a spooky Friday night. Don't want to give it away. You won't be sorry you checked it out.

I'm not being hyperbolic when I say that this was the scariest movie I have ever seen -- and I'm pretty well-versed in horror movies! I decided to watch it because of a copy-and-paste meme ("Don't you swear at me...") that had been making the rounds, and I got more than I bargained for. Toni Collette gives the performance of a lifetime -- she does unhinged so well. The first half of the movie is permeated by a growing sense of dread, fraught with tension but not too horrifying. The final act, however? I was screaming out loud and covering my eyes! A genuinely terrifying movie that's not for the faint of heart. This is one of those rare hyped-up movies that deserves every bit of the hype.

I found the plot twists paced perfectly and all the actors superb. The world within the world of the doll houses was perfect. I would have watched this much sooner but the cover of the movie doesn't mention any of the amazing actors who are in it. I gave it a chance because all the solid reviews it receives.

Annie: I never wanted to be your mother.

Peter: Why?

Annie: I was scared. I didn't feel like a mother. But she pressured me.

Peter: Then why did you have me?

Annie: It wasn't my fault! I tried to stop it.

Peter: How?

Annie: I tried to have a miscarriage.

Peter: How?

Annie: However I could. I did everything they told me not to do, but it didn't work. I'm happy it didn't work.

Peter: You tried to kill me.

Annie: No, I love you!

Peter: [crying] Why did you try to kill me?

Annie: I didn't! I was trying to save you!
