Get that Girls’ Night Going: Movies for Your Mood, Whatever Your Mood Might Be

Obviously I love to read, but I can’t read all the time. This was a hard lesson to learn, since reading is both my main leisure activity and, you know, a big part of my job. But sometimes I want to go places and do things outside of my apartment. Sometimes I want to focus on a new hobby. And sometimes, rather than burying my nose in a book, I want to slather on a restorative face mask while… (more)

Nora tried dating men but they always let her down. So a chance encounter with a black bear means a fresh start for Nora's love life. Nora must deal with the struggles and advantages her new relationship brings to her life. The concept is unique and entertaining. The art allowed the characters to show their personality especially when one main character is a bear that doesn't speak except for grumbles. This graphic novel is centered toward mature teens and adults.

This was very cute. Thank goodness it was a story because I could see someone actually doing this with a bear.

An unexpectedly cute love story. Nora is an average twenty-something just trying to get by, and her boyfriend, Bear is... a black bear. I know it sounds weird, but it works in the context of this slim graphic novel. Nora takes us through the ups and downs that come with dating a bear (e.g., he eats garbage when he thinks she isn't looking, but he's great at cuddling). Her best friends are torn (one thinks he's a riot while the other worries for her safety), her mom thinks it's a phase, and of course there's the issue of hibernation. How will they handle the seasonal separation? I didn't expect to find it so sweet, and I also didn't expect to find myself rooting for this couple! Cat Farris' illustrations are adorable. I would love to see more adult comics from her!

Nice art and a fun read. Graphic novel about the woes of dating. Super cute, but not for kids.

This bizarre little comic has the power to make you cackle in hysterics and also get just a touch choked up with feels. I knew going in that My Boyfriend is a Bear was not allegory—but actually experiencing the story of a woman meeting and falling in love with a literal bear...who understands English and wears clothes...was something else. But it's Pamela Ribon's writing and character development that really get you; being in Nora's head and experiencing the ups and downs of her life, her relationships with her boyfriend and her family, and all the other little details. It's a quick, fun read, and I really wish there were more. Sadly, this stands alone. But anything by Pamela Ribon (including SLAM! which was the first of her comics I read) will give you the same kind of feels and fun.

It's not a metaphor or an allegory, Nora is, indeed, dating a bear. can interspecies love survive the changing of the seasons?? It's funny and strange, so if you are looking for something different, give this graphic novel a try.

For preteen girls, perhaps.

A romance that survives parental displeasure, friends who doubt, messes, weight gain, and other difficulties, this isn't a typical tale. But it is a sweet one. It's told in a straightforward way that has confidence in its premise, runs with it, and keeps it going longer than I thought the concept could be sustained. This is good storytelling for a wide audience. I hope it gets one.

It's a cute, romantic comedy kind of story with fun artwork. I was expecting it would turn out to be allegorical... But it wasn't, really. It's just a girl dating a bear because he treats her better than most. There is some exploration of acceptance (or not acceptance, from some characters) but I guess it's more about understanding what you need and want out of life and being fine with that no matter what others say (whether it's dating a bear or reading popular magazines instead of deep and meaningful books that give you a headache).
