London, 2027. Humanity has become infertile and no child has been born for 18 years. Science is at loss to explain the reason. Immigration is a crime and refugees are caged like animals. African and East European societies have collapsed and their dwindling populations are migrating toward England and other wealthy nations. Torn apart by nuclear fallout, rampant terrorism and political rebellion. In this climate of nationalistic violence, a London peace activist turned bureaucrat Theo Faron, joins forces with Julian, his revolutionary ex-wife, in order to save mankind by protecting a woman who has mysteriously became pregnant. These three set out on a desperate struggle to deliver the world's only pregnant woman to the Human Project with hope that they can discover the cure for global infertility. As they carefully navigate between the battling forces of military police and a pro-immigration insurgency this small group must endure a death-defying ordeal of urban warfare.

Among the finest films in the Apocalyptical genre. So moving that I was NOT surprised to learn that the author was a woman. This is an engaging thriller but also has deep appeal to the thinking persons of planet Earth. Full of love and soul.

Interesting, a bit too much shaky camera work though. I liked that it showed very different conditions for richer and poorer/non-citizens.

Decent adaptation of the book of the same name by P.D. James- it is quite different though- and as the book is undeniably a superior work of art, it's worth picking it up for an excellent and thought provoking read.

The premise is good but I don't feel it was delivered well despite a cast of greats. Filming seemed realistic. Disappointed & checked off my curiosity list. I do agree that there are 'possibilities' & many understated messages. Many scenes not so unbelievable of future.

In the near future the human race suddenly finds itself suffering from a plague of infertility. With an aging population and zero birth rate society begins to come apart at the seams. Very well done.....excellent editing and sound effects, some remarkable performances and assured direction throughout. I was especially impressed with the undercurrent of dark satire that always seemed to be lurking just beneath the dramatics. I may disagree with some of the films rather facile politics but as a near-future thriller it succeeded admirably.

The movie is symbolic and from the comments it seems that the public does not understand symblic messages. The infertile humanity in this case means a decadent human race, which cannot continue anymore living the selfish way it has so far. In the end a new type of better man, who is not "infertile" goes forward into the future of the world on a ship named "Future." In fact, the new type of man has been visioned in the Holy books, which also are symbolic in their messages, which the crowd did not get the meaning of. In more fact, in 2003 in the French broadcast of RadioCanada, in "The Years of Light" scientific program there was mention of a report by an American "Bio-Ethics Commission" of Bush Jr., and in that report they outlined plans of genetic modification of the human race, and the creation of a perfected new worker breed, using bio-technolgy. The new race will replace gradually the present selfish and emotional commoners. So this is the new "fertile" human that goes forward into the future of the earth. This is really the meaning of the movie.
