1945, Claire Randall goes to the Scottish Highlands with her husband Frank. One afternoon, Claire walks through a circle of standing stones and vanishes into 1743, falling into the hands of a gang of Scottish outlaws. Marooned amid danger, passion and violence, her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.

I gave the book 5 stars several years ago, I recently "re-read" it by listening to the audio book. It was FANTASTIC.

5 Stars - I highly recommend if you enjoy historical fiction and romance.

When WWII nurse Claire is on a second honeymoon with her husband Frank, she is sent back into the past by some standing stones. She reappears in the 1700s, is assaulted by a British officer, and taken captive by some Scottish cattle rustlers. How can she escape and get back home?

Ahh I love this book. Listening to it was such a different experience, but a good way to get myself back up to speed so I can continue reading the rest of the series. I absolutely love Gabaldon's writing style and and the entire world that she created. Everything is so descriptive and vivid whether reading or listening. I of course, adore Jamie and Claire's story. It is so swoony, romantic, and action packed. I forgot how combative they can both be, but it feels natural during such a weird situation. I can't imagine being hurled back in time 200 years. I caught more things on the second pass through and really enjoyed the characters and scenes even more. I found myself more and less emotional at different times during this listen, but I will say that it made my menial work tasks go much faster, and it felt some comfortable and compelling to listen to. I don't have a lot of experience with audiobooks, but it seems worth the money because it is 32 hours long! Also, I liked the narration, but don't have a lot of experience with that yet either.

4 1/2 stars for the book, 5 stars for the audiobook. The narrator is amazing. It's looong--over 32 hours--but worth every second.

This is a historically rich story produced as a first-class audiobook. The novel itself is replete with historical and cultural detail and well-described characters. For the accolades it has received over the past decades, my criticisms of the plot revolve around its lengthy descriptions of sexual encounters, which were tedious and uninformative in my opinion, and on certain specific events that I felt lacked plausibility. Readers should be aware that sexual violence is a prominent theme. Those sentiments notwithstanding, the degree of attention to cultural detail is laudable and I would advise anyone who enjoys historical fiction generally, or historical Scotland specifically, to pursue the book. The narration by Davina Porter is near perfection. Her use character accents is top-notch, even to the point of deliberately modifying an accent when a character is speaking with different groups of people who differ in their linguistic norms. Her intuition for pacing, articulation, and emotional infusion is impeccable. I grade this audiobook A– for story and A+ for narration.

Well that didn't take long! 32 hr book...took 5 days. Couldn't put it down! If you like time period novels with a hint of scifi, this is a great one. Set in the Scottish Highlands, briefly in 1945 - mostly in 1743, you follow the story of a WWII nurse that is transported thru time to 1743. She initially wants to return to her own time, but after a forced marriage to save her life, she falls in love w/her husband & battles between wanting to return to her 1945 husband & staying w/her 1743 husband. This is book 1 in a series of 8 (at this time). HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Age recommendation: 18 & over

On a scale of 1 - 10 stars, I give it 10!

Let's just say, I had no idea what I was getting into when I ventured into this FANTASTIC series. I am such a fan. I am listening to them and loving the reader very much. Very fun and addictive. I even took the Outlander cookbook home and made some delicious eats! I am wearing my plaid as I type this.

This was my third time reading this book, but my first time on Audiobook. I can't believe how much I missed the first two times. I tend to skip around a bit when I read, something you can't do when you're listening to someone else read it aloud. Can't count the number of times I said to myself, I don't remember that happening before! Really enjoyed listening to Davina Porter's voice although her pronunciation of some words must have been British as it wasn't how we say them in Canada. I'm looking forward to listening to the next one. Was a challenge getting through the 28 CD's in the three-week check-out period.

Suspension of disbelief required. There were a couple historical errors which initially rubbed me the wrong way. However, if you can let that sort of thing go this is an amazing tale full of action and romance and adventure. It's a lot less gory than the Game of Thrones series, so a good alternative for people wanting some low-tech fantasy without the nihilism.

I now understand how this has become a classic. It has everything: drama, romance, Highlanders, post-WWII Britain, the kitchen sink.

The audiobook narration is wonderful and will gently waltz you through this meandering tale.

I'm generally not an audiobook listener, but there have been such rave reviews about Davina Porter's narration of Diana Gabaldon's books that, in addition to reading the book and watching the TV series and still feeling like I couldn't get enough, I thought I might enjoy yet another way to savor the Outlander experience. And, boy, is it an experience distinct from reading! Porter is simply marvelous -- the voices, the accents, the way I became oblivious to the fact that the narrator was in actuality a single person. At times, I half expected to hear sound effects, as though I were watching a stage performance. The pace seems slower while listening, but I didn't mind. I attribute that to the reader more likely skimming long, descriptive passages, unconsciously or not, while the listener is aware of every word. This, too, contributed to the feeling of an enhanced experience. 10/3/2014:

I loved this story when it first came out and I enjoyed rereading it now. The details in this story are fantastic. I can imagine being there. Am looking forward to rereading the rest of the series.
