I have not read the book that this film is based upon, however I liked this thoughtful and well developed film that concentrated on the espionage and the cloak and dagger aspects of being an informant/spy.
This made the film somewhat slower paced than the higher adrenalin action of other well done films, such as the 2017 ATOMIC BLONDE, the 2014 KINGSMEN: SECRET SERVICE, JASON BOURNE or recent BOND films.
This had a familiar feel to the 2010 SALT film, but delved deeper into the psychological training of the Russian Red Sparrow's, which was interesting and thought it was well acted and directed.
The extra deleted scenes were not of any real value.

So bad, in so many ways, can't count them out without including spoilers.

Movie tried hard to be something it couldn’t be. At least the ending ended properly.

Plot hard to follow and who was spying for who. Sex and torture, sex and torture. Some grizzly torture scenes. Did some fast forwards. Way to long 140 minutes.

This movie is well made. I would gave it a 4 stars if it was not for the torture scenes. I just fast forwarded these difficult moments. The ending is quite well written.

Not bad, not good, somewhere in between. Wish I could be as strong and could heal as well without a mark showing after such corporal punishments.

Unfortunately, this was a very disappointing movie. I felt this was primarily because I read the book first. Once again the screenwriters and directors in good old Hollywood have arbitrarily decided that they have to dumb down an otherwise good story to make it understandable for the public. As far as I can tell they eliminated at least two, possibly three subplots, all of which are fairly critical to understanding the overall story.

If you've never read the book, then you might consider this to be a fairly good movie. However, I would strongly suggest that you go ahead and read it to see what the author had in mind.

Some friends friends of mine who are intimately familiar with Russian culture, have commented on how unrealistic the book is. I however believe that when you take into account the fact that the author is an American writing about Russia and needing to make the Russians sound like Americans expect them to be I guess this is understandable.

Great spy thriller with lots of plot twists and good acting. The first half of the movie was interesting, with the spy school part. It was a solid movie where it had as much story as time and the pacing was just great! The last half plays like a real spy thriller with such extreme plot twists that you'd have to watch the last half again a second time.

As far as other complaints about nudity and torture scenes, again, most of this is in the first half of the movie. If you skip all that and start about the hour mark when she is assigned then that's where it becomes an amazing spy thriller. The last half also has some violence/torture scenes, but it's more interwoven into the story and honestly, I feel it reflects how Russia has been depicted, especially under the old Soviet reguime. People may forget how barbaric that type of government was and how it treated its own people and I think that has to be included in a movie about Russia because nobody is really safe in that type of system.

OK. Lead actress JL bared it all and there are plenty of torture, violence and nudity scenes. But all are superfluous and did not adds to the merit of this very long (2 hours plus) spy thriller. Plenty of cliche - bad, cruel Russians vs the good Americans. A very average film in the spy film genre.
