On an average day in the United States, guns are used to kill over ninety people and wound about three hundred more; yet such facts are accepted as a natural consequence of supposedly high American rates of violence. Private Guns, Public Health reveals the advantages of treating gun violence as a consumer safety and public health problem--an approach that emphasizes prevention over punishment and that has successfully reduced the rates of injury and death from infectious disease, car accidents, and tobacco consumption.

Hemenway fair-mindedly and authoritatively outlines a policy course that would significantly reduce gun-related injury and death, pointing us toward a solution.

A perspective about gun ownership in America that contemplates making guns safer. A comparison to the changes in the auto industry that have made driving much less lethal in 50 years is apt and it's astonishing that little if anything been done to prevent accidental injury and death.
Some argue that accidental gun deaths are a small fraction of all gun deathsand they are right. The author points out that legislation requiring changes to other consumer products has been achieved with even fewer deaths.
I think that gun manufacturers are given a pass, probably because their products are supposed to be lethal, and the ideology that America is still a cowboy culture led by the self sufficient, if not maverick self starter. The ideology attached to guns makes it different to a other consumer products.
