Journey through time to a gloriously extravagant Biblical setting of lust, violence, and betrayal in this meticulously restored Oscar-winning classic from legendary filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille. Victor Mature flexes his muscles through such scenes as Samson's barehanded battle with a lion, a single-handed assault on a thousand Philistine soldiers and the spectacular climax where he pulls down the pagan temple.

This epic biblical drama shows the life of Samson and his affair with Delilah.
The battle of Samson and the lion appears quite impressive.
The destruction of the Dagon temple looks amazing and awesome.
In a nutshell, this biblical drama turns out one of the best entertaining films.

A lively mix of luscious temptresses, bullying bad guys and one easily misled strong man. Surely George Sanders’ jaded sybarite represents the apex of his career. The special effects mostly entertain rather than convince; the moralizing biblical element is there for drama’s sake. One of the all-time great wow endings, kaboom.

Paramount's version of a vivid tale from the Bible stars Hedy Lamarr--the inventor--and Victor Mature as Samson, the strong man. It's quite good, actually; albeit rather stagey and showey. A 1949 film, using the color-technique of that era.

... just a little off the top.

The first bit of the movie was okay. I mean, it was great to see a much younger Lansbury, and Lamarr was not too hard on the eyes. About a quarter into viewing, however, I got bored. Samson himself leaves much to be desired.

I should have known better than to have put myself through the torture of watching this ludicrous spectacle which went on and on, incessantly, for 2 hours, 20 minutes.

Like, am I really supposed to take this one's story seriously? The way the women were literally throwing themselves at Samson was certainly worth a few laughs. And, of course, the lustful Samson was loving every minute of it even though he was supposed to be a faithful follower of his god (who apparently frowned on man's carnal desires and longings).

Anyway - I found that this 1949 film banked way too much on cashing in on Hedy Lamarr's beauty. And, to tell you the truth - I didn't think she was all that hot, anyway.

I guess, in this case - Only Samson's hairdresser would know for sure - Eh? (giggle. giggle)

And, speaking about Samson's hair - Since all of his super-strength was generated from his locks - Then - Why do you suppose he didn't grow his hair all the way down to his knees? Eh? Why?

And, speaking further about Samson (and not his hair) - For a man who was apparently a righteously devoted follower of his god (a god who looked upon him favourably) - He sure didn't conceal his intense carnal lust for all the babes.

Yeah. This guy was definitely thinking with his "other" head most of the time. That's for sure.

It really killed me that even though all of Samson's motives were totally self-serving - When he was required to prove his strength - All he had to do was call on this often-neglected god of his and (Presto!) he was promptly granted super muscle-power like no other man on Earth.

And, finally - When it came to actor, Victor Mature playing the Samson part - This barely fit dude was so pathetically miscast for his role that it was total blasphemy in my opinion.

A great pre-CGI sword and sandal epic classic !! ... and Lemar is still hot !

This is surely De Mille's campiest movie, with Hedy Lamar's Delilah vamping her way into the heart of a slightly fleshy and not so buff Victor Mature as Samson. All of salient points of the story are touched upon here and as usual, the production design has been meticulously researched and the costumes and sets are to die. The film picks up after the first 1/4. Painless.

Samson and Delilah was originally being considered around 1935 but never got to the screen until 1949. The casting of the parts is typical Hollywood. The Bible doesn't have Delilah as having any sister. Samson was a 'judge' in Israel for 24 years. He did desire to marry Philistine a woman but that didn't work out for a Danite man. Delilah in the film is quite the babe, played by Hedy Lemarr. The coloring of this 1949 film was very strikingly good and remains so today. I doubt that Cecil B. DeMille is able to stick to script. He took too many liberties with the tale of Samson from the Bible. This film made a lot of money when it ws released in 1949. The coloring an costuming alone make it stand out. (7/22/18)
