I loved this book! It is a wonderful fantasy novel with an intriguing character arch and plenty of action mixed in to boot! Willa is a forest child who travels on the edges of the shadows to steal from the day-folk. Her clan has fallen on hard times and by the command of their clan leader must steal from men in order to survive. However, Willa's grandmother has instilled in her a vast knowledge of the old ways and traditions of the clan. This has made Willa sensitive to the natural world and able to use extra abilities that most of her people have long forgotten. Willa is a brave and sensitive character who fights through her fears and often great physical distress to do right by her clan. Willa experiences great violence, cruelty, and loss, but holds on to her her compassion and fiery spirit. In Willa of the Wood, Author Robert Beatty adeptly creates a world that has historical context. The narrative of habitat loss and industrialization has sympathetic characters as well as villains on both sides. Beatty has a knack for placing the reader in the environment through his vivid descriptions of the Great Smoky Mountains. I would recommend Willa of the Wood to middle grade fantasy fans looking to read something wholly unique!
