I don't listen to much new music these days, so there is surely other great stuff out there. Of everything new I heard in 2018, this by far surpassed them all. Grungy stomp from a group that remains steadfastly and proudly stuck in the glory days of '90s alt-rock.

While her first album is more upbeat and has a lot of interesting wordplay and storytelling, this one is more of a plainspoken exclamation of, pardon the pun, how she really feels. The melodies are still quite fun, but she doesn't fill them up with complex lyrics, which is sometimes nice if you are struck with immediate feelings of sadness, like she seems to be going through. If you're looking to be depressed and hear about what depression is sincerely like, this is a great album.

Unlike the previous commentator, I wasn't disappointed in Aussie Courtney Barnett's third album (Not counting her collaboration with Kurt Vile.). Barnett is updating the 90s indie tradition both musically and lyrically. She's one of the best songwriters working today. My favorite song title is either "I'm Not Your Mother, I'm Not Your Bitch" or "Crippling Self-Doubt and a General Lack of Confidence." One of my favorite albums of 2018.

If you love Courtney Barnett for her storytelling and quick turn of phrase, you might be disappointed in this one. She gets very emotional, includes a ton of repeating (sometimes droning) lyrics, and seems to have lost her sense of humor. I'll keep returning to her first album and carefully pick and choose from this one.
