Barry Gifford wrote a series of novels with Lulu and Sailor, but this one was the basis for the 1990 David Lynch movie, which was an acid road trip with some "Wizard of Oz" thrown in. The book is less over the top, but has its moments of crazy. Gifford would work on the screenplay of Lynch's "Lost HIghway." Dedicated to the crime novelist Charles Willeford ("Miami Blues").

An intriguing book, terse and cryptic, raising more questions than it answers. The characters are deftly drawn with few strokes, and are variously lovable, frightening, and fascinating. My favorite is Johnnie Farragut, a P.I. supposedly searching for the main characters, Sailor and Lula, but who we only see meandering around, reading the Anatomy of Melancholy in his hotel room, and having ideas for short stories.
