The Prince and the Dressmaker
Graphic Novel - 2018
Paris, at the dawn of the modern age:
Prince Sebastian is looking for a bride--or rather, his parents are looking for one for him. Sebastian is too busy hiding his secret life from everyone. At night he puts on daring dresses and takes Paris by storm as the fabulous Lady Crystallia--the hottest fashion icon in the world capital of fashion!
Sebastian's secret weapon (and best friend) is the brilliant dressmaker Frances--one of only two people who know the truth: sometimes this boy wears dresses. But Frances dreams of greatness, and being someone's secret weapon means being a secret. Forever. How long can Frances defer her dreams to protect a friend? Jen Wang weaves an exuberantly romantic tale of identity, young love, art, and family. A fairy tale for any age, The Prince and the Dressmaker will steal your heart.

The Young Adult publishing industry has come a long way since my own teenage years when it comes to diverse and #OwnVoices titles, books written by authors who share a marginalized identity with main characters. This month, I encourage you to check out one - or more - of… (more)

GORGEOUS artwork, sweet story.
A delightfully validating graphic novel about the power of accepting yourself and others. I read this is in a single sitting and I've been swooning about it ever since. Romantic, colorful, and heart-warming, this is the book I know I will read time and time again whenever I need a pick-me-up. And... Read More »
The tenderness, the shame, the struggle that comes with forging new friendships, unearthing one's identity, opening up to young love all come to the fore in the Prince and the Dressmaker. It's a riveting, non-stop fashionable tale that I hope will continue in a sequel, because I don't want it to ... Read More »

Wang does a truly incredible job with this book -- it is full of warm colors, compassion, and creativity. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a sweet story about supportive relationships and staying true to yourself.
(Also, I would 100% wear all of the Lady Crystallia dresses. Bonus for fashion history nerds!)
