For the amount of hype and prolonged build up to this album's release, I am quite underwhelmed. Songs of Experience is a relatively catchy, easy to consume package, but not a whole lot more. The band showcase their willingness to use new textures and alter their sound, but not to any profound extent.

The singles for the record, "You're The Best Thing About Me" and "Get Out Of Your Own Way" are two of the more verbose, lackluster tracks and don't showcase much beyond their catchiness and pop sensibility. "Love Is All We Have Left" is a haunting, ethereal opener that feels like a breath of fresh air for the band. "Lights of Home" follows and is a successful first punch on the album. Beyond this point, however, the album flounders.

"Red Flag Day" is the exception. There is a youthful exuberance on this track rarely heard from the band these days. You can ~almost~ hear some War-era passion and fire. It should have been the lead single. It should have been the song from which the rest of the album developed. But yet so many songs on this album seem uninspired and confused. They don't go anywhere. This album is by no means bad, but beyond the first couple of listens there is not much to pull from or feel engaged with.
