"Humans are programmed to be active and awake while the sun is shining, and at home in bed when it is dark at night. Without enough sunlight exposure in the day, this can result in us feeling low, lethargic and unproductive. Whether you have SAD (seasonal affective disorder), or sit in a dark office cubicle, the Beurer Daylight Lamp is specially equipped to emit 10,000 LUX to help promote positive hormones so you feel happier. Exposure to sunlight increases the brain?s release of a hormone called serotonin. This is associated with boosting mood and helping a person feel calm and focused. At night, darker lighting cues trigger the brain to make another hormone called melatonin. This hormone is responsible for helping a person feel sleepy and go to sleep. Without enough sunlight exposure, a person?s serotonin levels can dip low. Low levels of serotonin can result in us feeling low, lethargic and in some cases it can lead to a higher risk of seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Our daylight lamp simulates the natural sunlight with a light intensity of around 10,000 lux ? normal electric light in the home or office has a lighting intensity of only 500 lux and is unable to affect the hormonal balance."

I am so glad that someone at LPL had the idea to purchase these lamps and make them available.

I recently tried one of these out...after what seemed like the zillionth gray day here in Lawrence. I plugged it in while my husband and I sat down and played backgammon -- setting it about one foot from my face on the table right in front of me -- with the game board just slightly to the left of the light. I didn't notice anything then. But after a good night's sleep I woke up the next morning feeling MUCH BETTER. It did just so happen that the sun was out that day too -- so not sure how much was the lamp and how much was the sun, but I've been keeping the lamp on and just off to the side of my laptop throughout the day too...and even on the gray days since that first day I tried it, I am still feeling better than I was.

One note of does appear that if I use the lamp too late in the evening, I have more trouble falling asleep.

It's great that the library has so many of these available...I hope that many people find them as helpful as I have. They come in a very convenient and lightweight carrying case and are simple to use.
