Plastic bags are cheap and easy to use. But what happens when a bag breaks or is no longer needed? In Njau, Gambia, people simply dropped the bags and went on their way. One plastic bag became two. Then ten. Then a hundred.

The bags accumulated in ugly heaps alongside roads. Water pooled in them, bringing mosquitoes and disease. Some bags were burned, leaving behind a terrible smell. Some were buried, but they strangled gardens. They killed livestock that tried to eat them. Something had to change.

Isatou Ceesay was that change. She found a way to recycle the bags and transform her community. This inspirational true story shows how one person's actions really can make a difference in our world.

My 3 year old son really enjoyed this book. He loves garbage and recycling, and he loves maps and learning about other countries. This book combined both for him. He was really fascinated with the illustrations - which were beautifully done. And, the story was well written - without being preachy. I could see my son develop genuine concern for the goats (who were getting sick from the garbage), and he has been talking about helping the animals around our home ever since reading the story. It's engaging story that helped lead to discussions about different cultures, recycling, problem solving, and courage to do something even when other's laugh at you. Would highly recommend to parents and teachers.

Lovely introduction on plastic for children. Nice message and the story is real. An example how one person can make a real difference.
