How did an ordinary, middle-aged couple become a symbol of defiance against Nazi brutality? This tale of courage unfolds against the tumultuous backdrop of Berlin in 1940. Otto and Anna Quangel are a working class husband and wife doing their best to ride out the war. Their son is killed fighting on the front lines. They begin pouring their rage and grief into postcards emblazoned with anti-Nazi slogans, risking everything to disseminate their messages of protest across the city.

4 stars for the story. This was a low budget film, but starring grade A actors Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson. The film is based upon a 1947 500 page novel based upon a Berlin couple secretly protesting against Hitler and his stupid, brutal war. This is a bare bones presentation of a story that needs to be told.

Highly recommended! An understated (and underrated!) WWII true story. Some people would say it moves a bit slowly, but we didn't think so. Tension builds and you see the fear of everyday people and what everyday life was like for them. You see great acts of kindness and courage amidst the evil. Excellent acting by Emma Thompson & Brendan Gleeson.

A true Five Star Movie because the film has no weaknesses!! The acting is first rate and the story is very well written. Berlin looks just like it did in World War II. The story is important with a message that a small postcard size statement could become so powerful in alerting the citizens of the dangers of the Nazi's. A story of courage and conviction to make an important contribution to the country they loved so much!

True story of how this couple thwarted the Nazi regime by using postcards to protest. The Nazi were so efficient in their hunt, and so ruthless. It makes you appreciate the bravery all the resistance fighters.

Learned of the real characters Otto and Anna Quangel and their courageous anti-Hitler postcard campaign during WWII. Excellent acting and engaging subplots on the lives of Berliners but the film lacked suspense on how the two protagonists managed to escape the net cast by a seemingly very clever policeman, eyes of ubiquitous SS officers and Nazi sympathizers over the course of three years.

Excellent film. Great performances by all lead actors. It did make me think about the rise of extreme right wing sentiment all over the world and the importance of resistance before totalitarianism takes hold. The film beautifully portrays the difficulty of living in such repressive conditions.

This movie is not based on a specific couple although there were people in Berlin doing small acts of resistance. The penalty was death. Under a totalitarian regime everybody lives in gut-clenching fear. Anyone can denounce you, a person who is jealous, has a small grievance, to gain an advantage. Even those putatively in power can lose their grasp and so even they are in fear.

Almost always movies are not as good as the books they are based on -- too much has to be eliminated to fit into 2 hours. The book was almost forgot-to-breathe suspenseful and the movie does its best. A very good effort in my opinion.

Yet another supposedly "based on fact" movie to try to tell us that Nazis were bad. Yes, another movie where the actors speak with an accented English to remind us that WWII happened in Europe, not the USA. Although the hero speaks English with a think, not very good German accent, he writes in German (so we get subtitles). Why? So annoying I can't even remember if there was any point to the story. Except Nazi = bad, and that whole theme is destroyed in the last 2 minutes of the film. Let's all feel sorry for the poor Nazis who were just following orders, okay?

Interesting story about couple dealing with the loss of their son during the Nazi era; sympathetic characters in the midst of pure evil.

Alone in Berlin is the European title of Every Man Dies Alone. Same book. I reviewed Every Man here at SIL and consider it the greatest novel about daily life in Nazi Germany by a non-Jewish German. The movie must needs compress the story or else it would run about 6 hours.

Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson seem an unlikely couple. They play their characters as gray, dull, almost affect-less people as they go about trying to do damage to power. They are almost invisible and they have to be or else their minuscule bit of resistance will have them killed if caught. The colors are drab, and their life is drab except for this one thing they do together.

You know what they called me in the courtroom, don't you? No? Cold-blooded Fromm. I have a mistress whom I obey. Her name is justice.
"Hitler's shadow falls over Europe like the devil's shadow. Pass this card on.
Down with the Hitler regime."
"Mother. The fuhrer murdered my son. Mother. The fuhrer will murder your sons, too."
"Pass the information. Join the free press. Fear has taken control of you. Kill it. Kill Hitler."
"Each thought against the national socialists is like sand in the criminal war machine. Pass on this card. Free press."
"How many children have to die? Fear is their only weapon. Free press."
"Help us to put an end to the criminal war machine. Free press."
Do I look like someone who would let his wife dictate things to him?
