From the #1 bestselling author - the story of an award-winning comedian who decided to run for office and then discovered why award-winning comedians tend not to do that. AL FRANKEN, GIANT OF THE SENATE is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it. It's a book about our deeply polarized, frequently depressing, occasionally inspiring political culture, written from inside the belly of the beast. In this candid personal memoir, the honorable gentleman from Minnesota takes his army of loyal fans along with him from Saturday Night Live to the campaign trail, inside the halls of Congress, and behind the scenes of some of the most dramatic and/or hilarious moments of his new career in politics.

Had the print copy of this book and a downloadable-audio version. After hearing the audio-format, I decided to exclusively continue with it because recalling Franken on Saturday Night Live, his voice is as much of his personality as his words. His blunt observations and challenging actions toward the established and archaic Senate along with party-first politicians are admirable. Immediately after reading this book, Franken resigned under pressure for sexual misconduct. Interestingly, I can’t think if I would have continued to have read the book if the scandal broke before finishing the book and yet, I’m glad I read it and appreciate the work he did for Minnesota during his time in office.

Learned much about how senators play their game to get elected. Al Franken’s reading with his inflection and tone of disbelief brings much life to his writing. I’ve had the occasional chortle with Franken’s unexpected comments. Highly recommended especially if you want to understand the zoo that is the current American senate.

Thoroughly enjoyed the book. I checked out a physical copy and CDs at the same time. The advantage of the physical book was seeing images, the advantage of the CDs was hearing his voice. My favorite chapter was about the struggles he has with the angel and the devil. A great inside view of politics.

A better choice for president than our current Grabber-in-Chief.

Al Franken is beyond awesome in all ways. He's so honest and funny and full of integrity and only pulls his punches a little bit now that he's in public office. He lends his voice to keep people motivated and out of the deep pit of despair and keeps us laughing in the meantime. Love it.

As a former Real Democrat [one truly hesitates to use that word today given all the neoliberalcons who claim to be such] I have always found Franken to be dismal and abysmal; his radio show on the old Air America refused to cover anything of any import, and he was pure vanilla, politically speaking, on that show.
His major legislation he sponsored, for quite some time after being elected to the US Senate, involved the nasty experience of Jamie Lee Jones [if I recall her name correctly], the married lady and rightwing conservative who decided to obtain a job in the middle of a war zone [that would be the capitol of Iraq early in the illegal invasion by Geo. Walker Bush, supposedly for that country's involvement/non-involvement in the attacks on 9/11. Ms. Jones was drugged and gang raped by a private military company there, none of whom were brought up on charges, as supposedly they weren't liable to US law [even though the laws I checked out said all contractors to US federal contracts were subject to federal regulations, et cetera, so this clearly contradicts the actual laws]. Franken has been no improvement to a pathetic, anti-worker, anti-labor, anti-union, anti-middle class and working class, Democratic Party!
