Opinion

From Library Staff

Jordan Peele combines his signature humor style with a terrifying premise to discuss racial politics in this 2016 smash hit. This movie will get your heart racing and your blood boiling. With thought-provoking social commentary, this film is an excellent new addition to the horror genre.

This modern horror/suspense film comes with more than a few laughs and a healthy dose of timely social commentary. Writer/Director Jordan Peele impresses in this debut that is as mind-bending as it is thought-provoking.

Predictable. Ordinary. Boring. Tries too hard to make a political statement.

Brilliant! All the way around, it is very hard to believe this is a first time director. A must see.

Up for several Oscars, this is a must watch. A fresh story, no gratuitous violence, a psychological thriller that you should probably not watch too close to bedtime. Exploring inter-racial relations this will give you a jolt that you will not forget any time soon.

Awesome. This movie is so good. I applaud the actors, especially "Georgina". She was able to cry and smile, laugh at the same time. She accurately portrayed the horror she was in also. The story was original and kept my attention throughout. Bravo.

Four Oscar noms. Transgressive. Worth watching.

This is more funny than scary, though the “horror” aspects (and social commentary) are all there. The “scares” are mostly of the type that make you jump, the laugh (maybe a little nervously); the special feature interviews highlight the similarity between “getting a laugh” and “getting a scare” in movie – both are about perfect timing. The true “horror” is in the concept: re-enslavement of Black people by high-tech and brainwashing. Disguised as a horror movie, this film is really a look at attitudes about racism and stereotypes, and is likely to start some serious discussions.

I'm not sure what's more repulsive--the mindless adulation of this film or the film itself.

An actually quite creepy, subtly-building horror/suspense story, reminiscent of the Stepford Wives. Occasional comic relief is well-placed and, while funny, also adds to the creepiness. I didn't expect this one twist near the end.
People who feel uncomfortable or isolated in social situations or among new people might especially identify with the ominous feeling.

We were not impressed. The acting was poor, the jokes minimal and point lost so many times, the twist at the end was expected though unknown- I would say it was the bottom of the barrel.

Until shortly before the end everything you see is not what it appears to be. A+++++
