As Venice braces for a winter tempest, Commissario Guido Brunetti, Donna Leon's intrepid Italian sleuth, finds out that an old friend has been savagely beaten at the palazzo home of reigning diva Flavia Petrelli. Then, as the flood waters rise, a corpse is discovered-and Brunetti must wade through the chaotic city to solve his deadliest case yet. Sinister and exotic, Acqua Alta is another chilling addition to Donna Leon's best-selling series.

(The fifth book in the Guido Brunetti series)

One of the pleasures of this Brunetti novel is the reappearance of archaeologist Brett, who brought the Xian exhibit to Venice a few years ago, and her lover Flavia, diva at Milan and all over the opera world. Unfortunately, the novel opens with the severe beating of Brett in her own home by two unknown men, apparently in a botched robbery. Brunetti visits her in the hospital as a friend, but when the head of the museum is murdered a few days later, becomes involved in a professional capacity. The pollution of high waters, and corruption of the art world, nearly overwhelm Brunetti, as he tries to find out who would dare substitute fakes for the real thing. One of the best, for its character development, including that of the bad guys, Brunetti's maturing children, and his co workers.

After reading Donna Leon's Guido Brunetti books I long to go back to Venice to see and absorb all the intriguing things I was completely unaware of in previous visits.
