For Clay Blackall, a lifelong resident ofProvidence, Rhode Island, the place has becomean obsession. Here live the only people who canexplain what happened to his brother, Eli, whosesuicide haunts this heartbreaking, hilariousnovel-in-fragments.

A failed actor impersonates a former movie star;an ex-con looks after a summer home perchedatop a rock in the bay; a broken-hearted salutatorianairs thirteen years' worth of dirty laundryat his school's commencement; an adjunctstruggles to make room for her homeless andself-absorbed mother while revisiting a scandaloushigh school love affair; a recent widower, with the help of a clever teen, schemes to rid hiscondo's pond of Canada geese. Clay compilestheir stories, invasively providing context in theform of notes that lead always, somehow, backto Eli. Behind Clay's possibly insane, definitelydoomed, and increasingly suspect task burns hisdesire to understand his brother's death, and thecity that has defined and ruined them both.

Full of brainy detours and irreverent asides, Exes is a powerful investigation of grief, love, and our deeply held yet ever-changing notionsof home.

Very clever and funny in parts. My only complaint is that the reader must read the book's summary to understand how each character relates to the other.
