"Pitch Black" was a taut, stripped down and visceral genre picture that didn't really need a sequel. But we have two (let's call it the Riddick-ology). Forsaking pretty much everything that made the original good, this bloated, expensive sequel adds a goofy fantasy element and indulges in some Star Wars/Dune-like world-building. It'd be worthless to detail the plot, but Riddick finds himself fighting some half-dead dudes called the Necromongers. There is some decent action and production design, but it's pretty silly stuff. It is kind of hilarious that Judi Dench is in it. This disc includes an extended director's cut. Followed by "Riddick."

I found that it was almost impossible to make any real sense out of this over-long, CGI saturated, Sci-Fi klunker._____ Here in "Chronicles" Vin Diesel, once again (ho-hum!), reprises his predictable "bad-ass" schtick as the unsurprising Riddick character, a man who (no matter how challenging the situation) is just a little too sure of himself on all levels._____ With plenty of laughable dialogue, tedious personal dramas, asinine plot-line politics and terrible character interaction, "Chronicles" never failed to get itself more and more bogged down by its stupidity and incoherency with every passing minute._____ From its dumb "Necromonger" head-gear, to its completely cardboard villains, to its corny and cliched ending, to its unbearably over-long running time - "Chronicles" took the ultimate WTF-prize with the preposterousness of Aereon (Judi Dench's character), a completely useless fairy godmother-type, who blankly looks on and does nothing while Riddick gets his ass royally kicked for about the umpteenth time._____ This film's budget was $105 million. On top of his "producer's" fee, Vin Diesel was also paid $11 million to play, pretty much, himself.

While this isn't a movie everyone will enjoy, I found it quite good. The acting is very good for this type of film, the fight scenes are very well put together, and you can never go wrong casting the lovely Alexa Davalos. I would recommend this to fans of action packed science fiction movies.

This is a tough call. I did like the sound and visual effects which my HOMETHEATER played well. But i just wasn't feeling the story. For some reason i couldn't get into this movie and neither could my friend. She talked a great deal while we watched this movie. It's filled with very good audio and the visual effects are very good for a science fiction movie. The cast was known to me and i like the characters. But the word "corny" which my friend used often, was also on my mind. I have only watched this movie once and i'm not sure if i will watch it again after buying it for my collection. That's bad news. But still, i'm giving this movie 3 and a half stars. For very good visual and audio effects, a good cast, and so-so story. I just wasn't feeling this one. A large bag of UTZ popcorn and a coke.

This is one of the best action sci fi movies out there. The art direction is beautiful and the supporting cast impressive.

Dame Judy Dench as the 'elemental' is perfect.
