In Singapore's Changi Gaol during WWII, Corporal King, a thoroughly unscrupulous and opportunistic American POW, makes shabby deals with the camp guards in order to make his confinement more comfortable. I have not seen this movie yet but am looking forward to it. I am trying to find all movies that Sir Tom Courtenay starred in. He stopped making movies for a long time but, now in his seventies, is enjoying a resurgence with movies such as Quartet, Gambit, 45 Years, etc. He was in Dr. Zhivago (also 1965 like King Rat) which I watch every year, as well as in the British "Angry Young Man" films of the early 1960's (Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner and Billy Liar).

This movie was interesting seeing a story about POWs surviving and not trying to escape. The actors did an amazing performance of capturing the struggle, heartache and lose of being a POW.

Next to "Shogun", "King Rat" was my second favorite novel by James Clavell. It's been a long time since I read the novel and can't remember if the movie follows the novel closely or not. But I did enjoy the movie. I like that even though it was made in 1965, they chose to do it in black and white, making it seem more like a World War II era movie.
