In this extraordinary thriller, rich in the atmospheres of medieval and contemporary France, the lives of two women born centuries apart are linked by a common destiny. July 2005. In the Pyrenees mountains near Carcassonne, Alice, a volunteer at an archaeological dig stumbles into a cave and makes a startling discovery-two crumbling skeletons, strange writings on the walls, and the pattern of a labyrinth; between the skeletons, a stone ring, and a small leather bag. Eight hundred years earlier, on the eve of a brutal crusade to stamp out heresy that will rip apart southern France, Alais is given a ring and a mysterious book for safekeeping by her father as he leaves to fight the crusaders. The book, he says, contains the secret of the true Grail, and the ring, inscribed with a labyrinth, will identify a guardian of the Grail. As crusading armies led by Church potentates and nobles of northern France gather outside the city walls of Carcassonne, it will take great sacrifice to keep the secret of the labyrinth safe. In the present, another woman sees the find as a means to the political power she craves; while a man who has great power will kill to destroy all traces of the discovery and everyone who stands in his way.

I really enjoyed this book having always found the medieval/crusades/Holy Grail stories fascinating. The modern quest for explanations and the links to the past are very well done. Diana Gabaldon, Mary Stewart and Bernard Cornwell all in one. I shall be looking for more of Kate Mosse.

This book has an interesting premise and a different take on the whole grail story. However, it is a real slog. Several times I considered abandoning it, but I did get through it. I appreciate the jumping back and forth in time motif, but the addition of a very convoluted story line kept me confused. The periodic use of untranslated French was also an issue. There was some attempt to give a rough translation, but it could have been handled better. I am not very familiar with the history of that time and place, and I suppose I learned something, but having to constantly process the new information and keep track of the confusing plot elements made for a slow read.

An excellent old-fashioned well-written story. Perfect balance between past and present, great pace, well drawn characters.. A great read.

Of course, the book is better than the movie. I read this book several years ago and the decided to watch the TV movie. The only similarity was the title and a few names. I had to reread the book to remind myself of the good story. The author;s other books are also very enjoyable. She is good at employing suspense and mystery.

AN EXCEPTIONAL READ. MUCH, MUCH BETTER THAN THE TV MINISERIES. DEFINITELY WORTH HANGING IN THERE AND FINISHING THE 500+ PAGES.

I just could not get into this book. I gave up after a few chapters. After reading some of the other comments though, I may give it another chance.

A good read, although I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as her "Sepulchre" -- seems to lose the thread of the story several times throughout, but still deserving of being read.

Very intense; it makes you keep reading until the end. It was interesting how everything ended up, but I won't share that (no spoilers here!)
