Vlad the Impaler - the man who inspired Bram Stoker's "Dracula" - died in the mid-1400s.. or did he? Scholars throughout the centuries that follow are drawn into a search for the truth that becomes their downfall. This is the story of a group of scholars that go further than anyone before, and witness strangeness and terrors they would not have believed were possible.

Not your average vampire story (and definitely nothing like "Twilight"), this is Dracula lore at its best. Spellbinding and intelligent, I followed each of the storylines eagerly. It's quite long, but entirely worth it. The audio version is also superb.

I really loved this book. The mystery at the center (what happened to the narrator's father and the story behind the mysterious book) hooked me from the start; what a delicious sense of foreboding! I listened to this unabridged version and thought the reader did a terrific job of creating distinction between each of his characters with various Eastern European accents. It takes some patience, and an appreciation for the history and folklore of Turkey and Eastern Europe. I felt that the author gave some characters short shrift, in that the reader doesn't get to know them as well as they may have wanted to in the end. Also, anyone looking for a real gore-fest will likely be disappointed. Still, I found it a satisfying interpretation of the Dracula myth.

The Historian:

Excellent reading/listening. If you are a fan or historian buff of Dracula stories and Vlad Tepish you will love this rich tapestry of a book. The storyline takes the characters beyond the Bram Stoker version delving deep in the heart of Eastern Europe legends, folklore and old ruins on a quest to find the real story behind the man. This book is the DaVinci code with the same intrigue, danger and coded messages in religious icons, scrolls and relics. Only here you are pursuing vampires, old books, old maps and obscure gravesites. I was sucked in after listening to the very first disc and could not stop.
