Jonathan Ware, who homesteaded with his family in Kansas before the war broke out, was killed by raiders sympathetic to the Confederate States of America. His elder son is in service, in the regular Confederate Army; his younger son is fighting on the side of the Union. His widow and his two daughters, Christy and Beth, have sought refuge from the constant raids in a hidden valley with other women and children. Dan O'Brien, an Irish immigrant who is in love with Christy Ware, is fighting on the side of the Union. He returns to the Ware farm on furlough, to find Christy alone during the day, farming the land, hiding at night in the sequestered valley. Dan impregnates Christy during his furlough, but does not know this before he returns to duty. Lafe Ballard, who has known and resented Christy Ware, rides with Quantrill, and he comes upon Christy, promising that he will find her out, wherever she is, and force her to his will. Christy is terrified that Lafe will discover the hidden valley and return with the raiders to prey upon the women hiding there. The Trampled Fields concludes an incredible, memorable, and powerful story with characters that come vividly to life in the midst of time of great emotional pain and destruction.
