Not the Musketeers or Monte Cristo but was easy listening for my daily commute across the bridge and back. All about tulips and love-great for Spring in Seattle.

Takes awhile to understand who is who, but an enjoyable story. Who knew there could be such drama in growing tulips?

The opening sequence is not exactly PG-13; the brutal murder of the de Witte brothers is described in gory detail. They leave behind politically dangerous papers in the possession of nephew Cornelius van Baerle, a talented gardener who is completely focussed on growing a perfect black tulip in order to gain the 100,000 guilder prize offered in exchange.

Jealous neighbour Boxtel denounces Cornelius in order to steal the tulip suckers but is thwarted.

Cornelius and tulip suckers are sent to jail, where he meets and falls in love with Rosa.

Sentenced to death, Cornelius leaves his tulips to Rosa provided that she "marries a respectable young man of about my age, who loves her, and whom she loves, and that she gives the black tulip, which will constitute a new species, the name of Rosa Barlaensis, that is to say, hers and mine combined."

When his death sentence is commuted, the two lovers work secretly together to grow the black tulip, while avoiding Boxtel who will do anything to steal the flowers.
