Beautifully written descriptions of landscapes and of the people of Nepal, Tibet, India, and other pilgrims to Mount Kailas. Thubron's writing is concise, reflective, and non-spiritual. His unsentimental, observations include plants, birds, mountains, and lakes; but also poverty, lack of education, unavailable healthcare, and massive destruction. For example, in discussing the Chinese occupation since 1950 he writes, "by 1976, out of more than 6000 monasteries and temples, 13 remained." A sobering read.
