This is a 1937 American drama directed by King Vidor, based on the Olive Higgins Prouty novel of the same name.
Although it is a nice story, Barbara Stanwyck and Anne Shirley overact so much that it appears unnatural and unreal.

Very Good 1937 film - "a stirring drama to touch the heart and haunt the mind" - Variety.

This is a high quality class conscious/post 30's depression film. It's poignant, emotionally turbulent; yes, also a bit soap opera - but an excellent watch. Just became aware of it while exploring work by Stanwyck; glad I've now seen it and give it a recommend.

Stars talented Barbara Stanwyck at age 30 as Stella Martin - and Anne Shirley at 19 as her daughter Laurel. As Laurel grows up, Stella's ambition and scheming to rise socially is redirected to her daughter's growth and development.

It was interesting to hear the flavor of Stanwyck character's working class speaking lines change as film progressed.

The film includes some fun comedy by Alan Hale as Ed Mumm character.

And the bit tricky ending ploy by Stella Martin character for Laurel was intriguing.

A very interesting film with some excellent acting by Stanwyck and Shirley. This film demonstrates how man and woman needed to conform to society's values in a bygone era.
