Before. Miles "Pudge" Halter is done with his safe life at home. His whole life has been one big non-event, and his obsession with famous last words has only made him crave "the Great Perhaps" even more (Francois Rabelais, poet). He heads off to the sometimes crazy and anything-but-boring world of Culver Creek Boarding School, and his life becomes the opposite of safe. Because down the hall is Alaska Young. The gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, self-destructive, screwed up, and utterly fascinating Alaska Young. She is an event unto herself. She pulls Pudge into her world, launches him into the Great Perhaps, and steals his heart. Then. . . .

After. Nothing is ever the same.

Opinion

From Library Staff

John Green's first novel is as funny and heartbreaking as his following books. Miles, a boarding school student, is seeking "the great perhaps"...then he meets the gorgeous, clever Alaska and she steals his heart.

Unlike a comment I saw previously, this book wasn't exactly set up to be unpredictable but for the execution of the ending to be tear-jerking. Can't say that it was exactly that tear-jerking.

I enjoyed this novel very much. it was so well written, very clever and relatable. The characters are likable, the story kept my interest. The ending was a little anti-climatic for me, but overall a good book.

What a gem of a novel, a glimpse into the strings that bind a group of gifted, perceptive teenagers, before the explosion of personal isolation devices like the cell phone. Miles, “Pudge” Halter leaves home for boarding school in pursuit of possibilities. The novel centers on how Pudge and his crew respond and relate to each other before and after a life-changing event.

I was okay with this book. It was perdictable, yes. But it had good writing and it was a dramatic book to read.

I didn't like this book at all. I think it was one of the worst books I've ever bothered to try reading. The characters were unlikable, the story was rather boring, and I didn't see or feel any of the charm everyone else seems to discuss when this book is brought up in conversation.

This story is so important. It shows you what youth is meant to be and then shows you what it is.

I am regularly a fan of John Green's but for some reason I did not like this book. I feel like it wasn't really relateable for me and was sort of predictable.

Sexual Content: There are a couple scenes throughout the story that would be catorgized as innapropirate and sexual. There is one scene in particular that is not sutiable for people under the age of 14 at least. I read this when i was about 12 and it wasn't appropriate and I didn't quite understand what was happening.

A beautiful novel that is truly indescribable. It's filled with laughter, sadness but also hope. It opens your eyes to see more than what's on the outside. To not just look, but to really see.
