Borderline
Book - 2016
A cynical, disabled film director with borderline personality disorder gets recruited to join a secret organization that oversees relations between Hollywood and Fairyland in this Nebula Award-nominated and Tiptree Award Honor Book that's the first novel in a new urban fantasy series from debut author Mishell Baker.
A year ago, Millie lost her legs and her filmmaking career in a failed suicide attempt. Just when she's sure the credits have rolled on her life story, she gets a second chance with the Arcadia Project: a secret organization that polices the traffic to and from a parallel reality filled with creatures straight out of myth and fairy tales.
For her first assignment, Millie is tasked with tracking down a missing movie star who also happens to be a nobleman of the Seelie Court. To find him, she'll have to smooth-talk Hollywood power players and uncover the surreal and sometimes terrifying truth behind the glamour of Tinseltown. But stronger forces than just her inner demons are sabotaging her progress, and if she fails to unravel the conspiracy behind the noble's disappearance, not only will she be out on the streets, but the shattering of a centuries-old peace could spark an all-out war between worlds.
No pressure.

Add a CommentOkay this book is the BEST book with fairies I have EVER read! This book is fantastic & I inhaled it like a family size bag of Munchies snack mix. Millie is such a great MC, & the assorted cast were all unique & so much fun.
On the surface, Millie's character comes across as troubled and unlovable (and it is very hard to be in love with a person with BPD), but I adored her matter-of-factness towards everything from judgments of the people around her, her mental health, her horrifically botched attempted suicide, and coming face-to-face with the fact that fairies are frickin real. She pushes through everything (and everyone), accepting all the facts and assembling all of the details to get to the bottom of it all with a steely determination I don't think even she knew she possessed until the end.
These characters are amazing. (I really loved Millie.) My knowledge about BPD is limited, my knowledge of what it's like to use prosthetic limbs or a wheelchair is also limited, so take my review with a grain of salt, but I found the story fascinating. I think it would be a great choice for Seanan McGuire fans too! For me, it did a great job of being a fantastic urban fantasy that just happens to have a disabled protagonist; that feeling of a character with issues, but the story isn't only about her injuries and illnesses, it's about how she works to solve the supernatural crime.
Urban fantasy and magic are things that are usually just outside my interests, so I was a bit dubious about this when I picked it up. But I loved the cast of characters and the way the pieces of the story fit together. The world building was great!
This was a book that I could not put down, breezing easily through the first three hundred pages. I love how different this book is, never a dull moment, and the story is just fascinating to me. So happy that there is a sequel! :)
Really good and fairly suspenseful. A good urban fantasy that creates a fantasy world just outside the realization of the real world. I'm looking forward to the next book.
I really enjoyed this book. IT kept me so interested I barely put it down. Excited for more good reads from Mishell Baker.
Los Angeles-based filmmaker Millie, paraplegic and institutionalized following a suicide attempt, receives an unusual job offer from Caryl, a representative of the Arcadia Project, a nonprofit organization that arranges gainful employment for individuals with mental health issues. What this actually means, Millie learns when she accepts the job, is that she's to serve as a liaison between Hollywood and Fairyland. Her first assignment? Track down a missing actor who also happens to be a Seelie Court noble. With its tough-yet-vulnerable heroine, gritty supernatural-inflected setting, and intricate fae politics, this debut may appeal to fans of Seanan McGuire's October Daye series.
One of the better urban fantasies I've read lately. Protagonist unusual and characterizations excellent. Decent plot twists. Definitely not a cookie cutter fantasy. I would be thrilled to read any sequels that get published.
