As a lover of fine craftmanship in cinematic storytelling - this was my favorite series hands down in last few years. Accordingly, it as accrued multiple BAFTA Awards for writing, acting etc. (British Academy of Film and Television Arts [similar to Oscars and Emmys in the U.S.]) If you love bold, plot or action-driven, formulaic American television series - or "Ha Ha" -type comedies - skip this for sure. However, if you enjoy a thoughtful, unexpected, uncluttered, (quirky) character-driven, and quite original series - watch "Detectorists".
Written, acted AND directed by Mackenzie Crook, it was produced as a "small" series in terms of budget etc. for BBC 4, so only 6 episodes per series - but each one a gem. Slow enough to relax into the beautifully shot natural settings and clever enough to just want to keep watching. I watched each series through twice. Almost all of it is easy to watch a second time ( unbearable for me for almost any plot or situation-driven show). And, as a great bonus for doing so, unexpectedly found myself laughing out loud at much very subtle humor I missed the first time. I think that on first viewing; not being British required a bit of extra attention due to various unfamiliar expressions, slang, parlance, historical references etc.
If you know and love Simon & Garfunkle, metal detecting, corvids or philosophy - extra layers of subtle humor will delight.
One distraction in SERIES 3 - the character "SOPHIE" is simply missing with no explanation. Could not even find a reason online. Actress Aimee-Ffion Edwards likely busy with another job?
The DVD Extras worth watching if you enjoy the show. Have found that BBC Extras are generally so much better quality in terms of content than U.S. product in general.
Sadly, Crooks says Series 3 will likely be the last.
Even the theme song (by Johnny Flynn) is multilayered: beautiful, melancholy, hopeful and a little haunting.

Delightful, quirky, subtle humor about an esoteric hobby - though most of the humor deals with interpersonal relationships. Yes, there are such things as relationships, jealousies, and betrayals even among nerdy hobbyists :-) (The jokes aren't at their expense.) The "Simon and Garfunkel" sub-plot is hilarious, especially when song titles are slipped into the conversation. I was glad I detected this series - it gave me a much-needed laugh.

Droll British humor, a gentle story, and the lush English countryside made this BAFTA- winner one of my very favorites ever. Can't wait for part 2 of the story of Andy and Lance!

Just finished the first season....thought that it was going to be a detective type comedy series with metal detector enthusiasts solving crimes...Nope!
Instead found a warm funny story about the personal lives of two odd characters who happen to be involved in an engrossing hobby.
This series also imparts interesting nuggets about the world of people who scour the English countryside for historical artifacts and possible treasure.

Love it, love it, love it! Sweet, quiet, meditative, funny, warm, pure joy and delight! Yes, there is an occasional swear word here and there, still, British country side is absolutely stunning, script and cast and acting are impeccable, music is lovely, I smiled while watching it and long afterwards, cannot recommend it high enough! So glad I stumbled upon it and even more glad my OPL is getting Season 3 soon, cannot wait to see how they will wrap all the characters and stories up. (yes, season 3 is the last season). 5 out 5 stars for sure:)

Writer, director, and star, Mackenzie Crook strikes gold with the cozy comedy series, Detectorists. Andy (Crook) and his partner in detecting, Lance get into all the reasonable shenanigans you’d expect two detectorists in rural Essex to get into, while using the hobby to escape their unfulfilling day jobs. Murder, infidelity, undetonated bombs, Nazi war planes, and centuries old treasure manage to take center stage at various points, but the heartbeat of the show is the delightful residents of Danebury and the eccentric members of the Danebury Metal Detecting Club.

The characters remind me of, an "English" version
of Andy of Mayberry. They are down to earth
plain folks. An enjoyable and different series.
Great acting.

Funny and quirky. But the writers apparently think that you need a "potty-mouth" to be those things. So, these funny quirky folks won't be invited to my home again.

Quirky, gentle and funny...loved it. Highly recommended for those looking for something beyond the usual offerings of beautiful people, sex and violence .
