The Rules and the Exceptions
I’m a natural-born rule follower. If there’s a rule in place, it almost never occurs to me to ask why it’s there or whether it’s worth following; it’s a rule, so unless it’s a pile of ethical garbage, I’m probably going to follow it. My preference for strong, clear guidelines in all things (Obligers, am I right?) even bleeds over into my reading habits. I’ll often set rules for myself about wh... (more)

Add a CommentStrong, authentically human characters who are hampered by the realistic constraints of their historical context. I thought the romance was lovely!
I've read half a dozen Courtney Milan books & this is one of the best so far. Well written with well defined characters, interesting back stories, smart dialogue & some loving sex scenes. The last couple chapters were a bit long but that's what happens when you have to meet the publisher's page numbers. One of my favorites. IOTB
This first volume in the Brothers Sinister series offers up an unusual premise for a historical romance, but also provides a steamy and satisfying ending. Readers will cheer for Minnie as her courage develops and her self-worth builds. Witty banter, plot twists, and underlying human rights issues make this an extraordinary romance novel.
Review excerpt: "'The Duchess War' is lovely – smart, touching, funny, sexy, and dizzyingly romantic. Read it right away – yes, now. Everything on your to-do list can wait, believe me."

Book 1 of the Brothers Sinister Series, Milan is known for her complicated and feisty women, and our hero Minnie is a great example. She's in hiding from a scandalous past, but her wallflower facade is a thin one as the Duke of Clermont quickly discovers. Robert has his own secrets as he fights for workers rights while navigating the minefield of society. Not set in London and focusing on social issues of the time, this fresh point of view and compelling characters made the novel a fast read. Sensuality rating: Hot -- Jody W, Web and Online Services
Quick, fun, historical romance. Intriguing heroine with an interesting back story and steamy love scenes.
