With nods to classic fantasy expertly woven into this surprising and emotionally-charged journey through the ups and downs of middle school, Megan Frazer Blakemore proves that even the bravest heroes need true friends by their side.
Ruth Mudd-O'Flaherty has been a lone wolf at her new middle school ever since her best friend, Charlotte, ditched her for "cooler" friends. Who needs friends when you have fantasy novels? Roaming the stacks of her town's library is enough for Ruth. Until she finds a note in an old book...and in that note is a riddle, one that Ruth can't solve alone. With a tantalizing set of clues before her, Ruth must admit she needs help, the kind that usually comes from friends. Lena and Coco, two kids in her class could be an option, but allowing them in will require courage, and Ruth must decide: Is embarking on this quest worth opening herself up again?

This book is well written and the author is very good with words. The story line itself isn't very interesting but the details in the book helped the story move along. I would recommend the audiobook since the narrator adds a lot to the story. The age group that would enjoy this book the most is 10-12 year olds as the book is centered around a 6th grader. I would give the audiobook 4 stars and the book itself 3.5 stars.

from my 6th grader who we enjoyed the audio book with -
This story is about how a girl called Ruth is abandoned by her friend, Charlotte in middle school for the popular girls group and solves a quest, getting some new friend that help her throughout the quest. After finding a riddle inside a old book, she searches through the library for more riddles. She makes an unlikely friend during P.E. and finely lets one person into her quest. Her mum is still traveling to many places, without stopping to come see Ruth's mom and Ruth, she was supposed to be home a lot of times but because of the heavy snow either her flight was cancelled or delayed so she cant get home. She has a lot of things on her mind, like the spelling bee, the riddles, her mum, her birthday, Charlotte, and the library. I like this audio book because the narrator made everything fun and exiting with all her different voices. This book also had a couple of twist that we didn't know was coming.
